Special Education Assistant: $18.35/hour (must have the SEA license from the State of Wisconsin) Instructional Assistant: $16.22/hour Along with the hourly pay, The Sun Prairie Area School DIstrict offers a $100 bonus every month a substitute works 5 or more days filling in for an absent employee. Purpose of Position The purpose of this position is to assist teachers and school staff in the duties and responsibilities of the absent staff member under the direction of the teacher and other school staff members including the principal. The positions may include special education assistants, playground/instructional assistants, library assistants, bi-lingual assistants, secretaries, and clerical assistants. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. The building secretary will provide each substitute with a folder of information that includes school emergency information, the layout of the building, the school schedule and information on accessing the notes/plans from the absent employee. It is expected that the substitute will follow the prescribed schedule for the absent employee; following the break schedule and performing required duties. It is furthermore expected that the substitute will document the events of the day for the absent employee, clean up the classroom area and respect personal privacy. Substitutes are encouraged to actively seek direction from teachers and staff; they are not to conduct personal business such as phone calls, texts, reading or other activities while on the job.
  • Support a safe learning environment for students to enable them to meet or surpass their capabilities
  • Support and facilitate activities set by teachers
  • Facilitate the inclusion of students; also promote acceptance of differences with students, staff and community
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers in providing academic assistance to English Language Learners (ELL) students
  • Conduct small instruction groups under the guidance of the teacher
  • Assist students in completing assignments and tests
  • Supervise students on the playground, cafeteria, classrooms and other areas before, during and after school
  • Follow behavior management plans, collect data and maintain records when requested
  • Provide self-care assistance for students, including but not limited to feeding, diapering, and toileting, etc.
  • Provide back up to the nurse for tube feeding, catheter and medication distribution
  • Perform various duties to assist teachers including copying, filing, data entry, correcting papers, etc.
  • Greet visitors, provide information and assistance
  • Answer telephone, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and directing calls
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions High school graduate. Prefer candidate with training in special education, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities; DPI certification provided by employee, CPR and first aid certification. Must possess a valid driver's license. Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computer, typewriter, photocopier, calculator, telephone, fax machine, etc.
  • Ability to operate a variety of audiovisual equipment
  • Ability to restrain, lift, transfer, move from floor to standing quickly, and otherwise assist students with disabilities
  • Ability to learn to use Assistive Technology devices or software with training
Mathematical Ability
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate decimals and percentages
  • Ability to do basic algebra and geometry
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and/or prepare a variety of documents using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, students, parents, administrators, nurses, and others verbally and in writing
  • Ability to use and interpret special education terminology
Environmental Adaptability
  • Ability to work effectively in an classroom and/or office environment
  • Ability to work with physically aggressive students
