Job Type Part-time Description Job Title: Sorter Day / Evening FLSA Status: Nonexempt Department: Sorting Reports to: Production Supervisor Approved by: Patricia Garcia Luna Approved date: Approved for use 2021 Position Summary The Sorter is responsible for sorting incoming soiled laundry from healthcare and hospitality facilities in preparation for the laundry process. Sorter staff work as a team, with each member operating stations, located on an elevated platform, in which soiled linen can be automatically conveyed and sorted according to type. Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities This position will work within a team of people performing similar duties. Along with one or more team members, Sorters may perform some or all of the following duties during a given shift:

  • Push carts to holding area by customer account
  • Position cart on the floor-located scale to note bag weight
  • Sort linen by hand to identify and separate by type
  • Operate linen cart dumper to unload bags of linen onto conveyor
  • Manually open bags containing soiled linen
  • Pick up and place linen in the appropriate bins
  • Maintain a clean work area
  • Additional duties as assigned
  • Perform job rotation as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to comprehend, read and write in English and or Spanish
  • Quality orientation and high attention to detail
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations
  • Strong teamwork skills-ready and willing to work closely with team members
  • Open to and able to work day or night shifts, and willing to rotate shifts depending on production need
  • Open to long hours and working weekends (Sat/Sun)
  • Able to continuously push/pull wheeled laundry carts while empty and with over 250 pounds when full
  • Pass a background check and regulated drug screen, in accordance with applicable laws
  • fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or request an accommodation for qualifying medical condition or sincerely-held religious beliefs

  • Prior experience working in a plant environment
Requirements Physical Requirements
  • Physical Demands include constant standing and frequent walking throughout entire work shift. Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on work surface.
  • Constant reaching above and below shoulder height, twisting, applying pressure, grasping (including fingers, thumb and palm) items and loading machinery in a repetitive motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This occurs constantly throughout the shift requiring substantial use of the upper arms, shoulders and back muscles.
  • Workstation is elevated. All employees working in this role must be able to ascend and descend stairways constantly throughout the entire shift.
  • Constant reaching above and below shoulder height, twisting, grasping items and loading machinery in a repetitive motion.
  • Constant throughout entire 8-hour shift, fingering, fine manipulation, picking and grasping primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm.
  • Constant pushing/pulling of both empty and full, wheeled laundry carts of varying weights and sizes, up to and potentially exceeding 250 pounds.
  • Repetitive hand movement includes simple and power grasping, fine manipulation and pushing and pulling items up to 50 pounds on a constant basis.
  • Heavy work, including exerting force and lifting up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 20 pounds force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to maintain productivity requirements in a fast-paced facility where all operations are driven by fully functioning, full life cycle computer system. System uses time sensitive production that follows a system of conveyor surfaces to move products and materials through the entire cleaning process to assure highest quality cleaning functionality.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information.
  • Ability to remember and communicate routine, factual information.
  • Ability to organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology

Work Environment Production areas of a typical industrial laundry facility, which includes working with and around large machinery, variations in temperature (non-air-conditioned work area), noise, humidity, odors, biological hazards and other hazards. Worker is subject to sustained hot working environment. Inside environmental conditions without cooling air conditioning and internal temperatures vary and can be within range of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and higher. Worker is exposed to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above ambient noise level.
