Job Description:
Work Location: Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center, Pollock LA
Position Description: This individual will serve as the lead instructor teaching gardening subject matter in a track format to an audience of up to 25-50 youth at a time, grades 4th - 6th in a camp setting. This person will be responsible for meeting with and mentoring two other assigned camp staff before and after track time each day. The instructor will join other summer staff in providing safe supervision of youth while at camp and will support 4-H professionals, volunteers, and members in conducting meaningful educational experiences to help develop life skills. Works under the direct supervision of the 4-H Program Coordinator to implement all policies and procedures of the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana 4-H Youth Development program.
Essential Job Functions:
* Teach natural sciences, environmental education, and gardening/horticulture curriculum utilizing a mix of indoor and outdoor classroom settings for campers
* Prepare and coordinate track curriculum with the 4-H Program Coordinator prior to camp.
* Maintain, manage, request equipment, and supplies for the track.
* Clean assigned teaching areas daily and at the end of week.
Qualification Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in education, sciences, natural resources or field related to natural resources including but not limited to Horticulture, Plant/Soil Science, etc.
* At least one year of teaching experience and expertise.
* Must complete the employee background screening process and be approved by the LSU AgCenter Human Resource Management Unit.
* Professional communication skills, both written and oral. Work efficiently with youth in group situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Incorporate adult volunteers and campers into the track as teaching assistants/helpers who are also learners.
* Ability to communicate and direct small and large groups of youth.
* Flexibility in schedules and programming.
* Efficient organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to coordinate and manage resources.
Salary and Benefits: Salary: $3,000.00 for the nine-week period.
Date Available: Camp session is May 26-July 31, 2025. Work hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday each week from 7:30 am until 12:00 pm, plus prep and clean-up time. Required training period is May 15-23, 2025. Camp will not be in session the week of June 16-20, 2025.
