Works part-time; non benefit eligibleClassified Job Title: Airport Operations InternWorking Title: Airport Operations Center (AOC) InternGeneral Summary:The Airport Operations Center (AOC) Intern will support the AOC team at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) by assisting with situational awareness, communication, and resource coordination functions. This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn about airport operations, emergency response protocols, and critical decision-making in a fast-paced, 24/7 operations environment. Under the supervision of AOC Coordinators, the intern will gain hands-on experience operating essential communications equipment, supporting incident tracking, and monitoring airport systems to ensure efficient and compliant operations.The AOC Intern role serves as an entry point for individuals seeking careers in aviation, public safety, or emergency management by providing valuable exposure to key systems and processes that keep one of the nation's busiest airports running efficiently.Responsibilities:1. Assist AOC Coordinators in monitoring key airport systems, including flight tracking, weather detection, emergency notifications, and facility status updates to maintain situational awareness.2. Support communication functions by answering non-emergency calls, logging incidents, and relaying information via telephone, radios, and other communication tools.3. Learn and operate critical systems, such as Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), the Airport Operational Database (AODB), and other resource management platforms, under supervision.4. Assist with dispatching resources for facility maintenance, housekeeping, and other operational needs while maintaining accurate logs and records.5. Support emergency response processes during irregular operations (IROPS) by shadowing AOC Coordinators and participating in drills, table-top exercises, and special events.6. Collaborate with airport stakeholders, tenants, and internal departments to support seamless communication and resolution of routine issues.7. Assist with data management tasks, including incident reporting, gate assignment monitoring, and system updates to ensure operational accuracy.8. Perform assigned special projects and process improvement tasks to support AOC team goals and operational efficiency.9. Learn about federal regulations such as 14 CFR Part 139, emergency response protocols, and the role of the AOC in ensuring compliance with safety and security standards.10. Observe and assist in coordinating responses to real-time situations, gaining firsthand experience in decision-making and resource prioritization.11. Other duties as assigned to support AOC operations and professional development goals.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:•Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree program in Aviation Management, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Transportation, or a related field.•Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information professionally and clearly.•Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) with an aptitude for learning new systems and software.•Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.•Interest in airport operations, emergency response, and aviation communication systems.•Ability to remain calm, focused, and professional under pressure, particularly during emergencies or irregular operations.•Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.•Strong attention to detail with an emphasis on accuracy and accountability.•Valid driver's license preferred with ability to meet airport driving privileges, if required.Physical Requirements:This position is sedentary in nature and may require prolonged periods of sitting or standing at assigned workstation. Lifting of less than 25 lbs., such as books and laptops. On an occasional basis physical activity may include reaching, lifting, kneeling, squatting, standing and twisting. Works in a dimly lit room without windows. Must be able to operate and monitor communications equipment, such as data terminals, computers, radios, and telephones. Interns will gain valuable experience in operational systems, emergency response, and stakeholder communication while supporting the AOC team in day-to-day tasks and special projects.
