Job Description:
The Siena College Criminal Justice Studies Interdisciplinary Program is seeking an instructor to teach one section of the following undergraduate course in the Spring 2025 semester: Reentry into Society. Course Description: CRJS 240: Reentry into Society. This elective course for the Criminal Justice Studies major on both the Human Rights and Policy, Practice & Administration Tracks, focuses on the landscape of reentry. When individuals return from years of incarceration, they face significant, sometimes overwhelming and insurmountable challenges, often causing them to recidivate to survive. This course will explore the challenges faced by returning citizens, including the different experiences of youths versus adults, elderly adults, and persons wrongfully convicted. Students will probe the needs returning citizens have, which, if met, would promote desistance from reoffending. Students will be introduced to the concept of doing justice and will reflect on whether our laws, policies and practices mete out justice for all, or whether they are applied in a discriminatory fashion. Attention will be paid to whether and how certain reforms could render the system more just for all. Taught through a restorative justice lens, this course will feature interactive methods to enable students to empathize with and consider meaningful solutions for those returning to their communities following incarceration. The Franciscan values of heritage, diversity and above all, social justice, will echo throughout this course via the lectures, readings and interpersonal connections and experiences offered. We encourage applications from candidates with teaching expertise in criminal justice topics including mass incarceration, disparities based on race and class, restorative justice and reparations. Class size: 30 students.
