The County of San Diego's Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM) is seeking an exceptional candidate for Agricultural/Standards Inspector.Incumbents will be responsible for performing professional-level technical inspections, determining compliance, and enforcing agricultural, weights, and measures laws for the protection of consumers and the agricultural industry. Positions in this job classification will be assigned in the Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures, and reporting to its headquarters office in San Diego or one of its satellite offices in San Marcos, Vista, or Chula Vista.THE DEPARTMENTAWM serves the community by protecting public health, environment, and local agriculture by performing the following functions:Ensures the safe use of pesticides and investigates illness.Prevents the establishment of pests that require pesticide controls, sting or severely injured people, or inhibit growing fresh nutritious fruits, vegetables, and other plants.Promotes the use of effective biocontrol measures.Inspects commercial agriculture production sites to ensure compliance with regional stormwater pollution prevention practices.Regulates organic growers, certified producers, and certified farmers' markets to allow local marketing of fresh commodities.Ensures accurate net quantity of packaged goods and accuracy of commercial weighing, measuring, and scanning devices.THE POSITIONAgricultural/Standards Inspectors (ASI) conduct inspections, investigations and enforcement actions related to: pesticide use, pest prevention, export certification, commodities, stormwater, hazardous materials, apiaries, weighing and measuring devices, packaged goods, petroleum products, weigh-master, and price accuracy.HIRING PROCESS AND TIMELINEJob Offer and Background Process begins after interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.Pre-employment medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.If you are not selected for this interview process, you may have the opportunity to compete for future vacancies.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. Required education/experience: qualification to take the licensing examination given by the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture for the County Agriculture Inspector or the County Weights and Measures Inspector. Those requirements are as follows:Possession of one or more valid statewide specific category licenses as a County Agricultural Inspector/Biologist; OR,Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college with specialization in:(A) One or more appropriate disciplines in agricultural, biological, chemical, or physical sciences; OR,(B)Any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester units, or equivalent, in one or any combination of the following disciplines:Agricultural Science,Biological Science,Chemical Science,Physical Science,Mathematics, and/orStatisticsThe educational requirements in subsection (2)(A)/(B) may be satisfied if specialized requirements of the bachelor's degree program include any combination of one or more of these disciplines totaling at least 30 semester units, or equivalent, or may be satisfied through additional college level education, or combination thereof.NOTESIn order to qualify under requirement #1 above, a copy or copies of the State of California state-wide specific category licenses as a County Agricultural Inspector/Biologist must be provided during Step 1 of the online application submittal process OR submitted by email to: order to qualify under qualification #2 above, a copy or copies of an unalterable complete official or unofficial transcript, or letter of verification must be provided during Step 1 of the online application submittal process.
