Job Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires good comprehension in reading, interpreting engineering drawings, repair manuals and related technical data and thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of tools and techniques of rework and repair of sheet metal fabricated structures.
- Requires a good knowledge of shop mathematics, ability to lay out, form, shape, and/or fit and assemble multi-contoured parts using such precision instruments as micrometers, calipers, dividers, dial indicators, levels, protractors, clinometers, gages and rulers, and such metal working tools as hand and powered sheers, brakes, rolls, mallets, forming blocks, hand saws, grinders, sanders, files, a wide variety of pneumatic drills, rivet guns, and blind fastener tools.
- Requires a good knowledge of various machinery to include band saws, hydraulic and manual press brakes, hydraulic and manual shears, shrink/stress press, turret punch, etc.
- Requires a good knowledge of various hand tools to include pneumatic rivet guns, pneumatic/electric drills, hand shears, countersinks, calipers, micrometers, Cleo clamps, cherry max guns, hi-lock tools, clamps, drills, scales, etc.
- Requires good knowledge of various aluminum, steel, and stainless-steel alloys and heat-treating properties for use on aircraft structures.
- Requires a good knowledge of aircraft structural hardware (including applications and techniques of preparation and installation) such as solid, tubular, and explosive rivets, cherry max rivets, standard and special aircraft bolts, nuts, and washers, anchor nuts, hi locks, dzus fasteners, screws, airlock and fasteners, and variety of other structural fasteners.
- Requires good knowledge of and the ability to detect various types of corrosion such as surface corrosion, galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion, pitting corrosion, and fretting corrosion.
- Requires a good knowledge of corrosion treatment, repair methods and proper tools used in corrosion removal.
- Requires a good working knowledge and probable effects of various loads and stresses applied to structures such as compression, tensile and shear, and the ability to recognize an overloaded or over stressed condition.
- The sheet metal mechanic must rely on advance trade knowledge and the ability to improvise trade techniques.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Three (3) years' experience with an aircraft sheet metal mechanic background in manufacturing/repair/installations on commercial or military aircraft required.
