PAY/RANGE: $57,295 - $66,323 per year DOQ, plus uniform allowance, certification & shift pay.
SUMMARYThis position provides law enforcement services to the Airport in accordance with Federal, State and local laws, and specifically Transportation Security Regulation 1542and associated Federal, State and local security rules, policies and procedures. Enforces appropriate Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances, provides emergency response to airport terminal checkpoint operations per TSA federal regulations as well as emergency response to such events as bombthreats, an active shooter, hijacking, and aircraft accidents; and performs other duties as assigned. This position is subject to twenty-four (24) hour work availability, including shift work, weekends, holidays, emergency calls, and special events. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Patrols Airport buildings and grounds on foot and in vehicle.
- Enforces laws, city ordinances and airport policy, including parking and traffic laws.
- Responds to calls for service and assistance, including but not limited to emergency responses.
- Assists civilians, passengers, employees and airport tenants as needed.
- Investigates and reports various types of incidents; investigates criminal offenses, interviews victims and witnesses, interrogates suspects and prepares written reports.
- Acts as medical first responder for medical emergencies, and provides first aid as needed.
- Arrests suspects and files appropriate charges.
- Searches suspects, vehicles and structures; collects evidence; and searches crime scenes.
- Maintains and reports on lost and found property and evidence in compliance with legal guidelines, and assists in the disposal of unclaimed property or evidence according to applicable guidelines.
- Prepares and submits required reports, maintains electronic and paper files, and locates/researches documents in filing system and computer system.
- Guards the TSA checkpoints in the absence of TSA staff.
- Maintains positive public relations.
- Testifies in court.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS High School Diploma or GED required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES- Thorough knowledge of city ordinances, state and federal laws, and airport policy.
- Ability to operate computers and other basic office equipment.
- Ability to operate a paging system and two-way radios
- Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, etc.
- Ability to work, remain in control, and exercise sound judgment under pressure and during highly stressful emergency situations.
- Knowledge of first aid procedures.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply defensive tactics to effectively protect self and other.
- Strong verbal and written communication skill.
- Ability to maintain good public relations with Airport tenants and the public.
- Ability to make decisions involving law enforcement matters at the Airport.
- Ability to evaluate situations, make effective decisions under pressure and take appropriate action.
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively use fixed base and portable two - way radios, pagers, and fixed and wireless telephone communications devices;
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively use firearms and other specialized police weapons and equipment, specialized security equipment including automated security systems, automated fingerprint systems, photographic and / or camera monitoring systems and similar type systems and devices;
- Ability to drive and operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to write clear, concise, detailed reports in a timely fashion.
All candidates will be required to submit to a fingerprint-based 10-year Criminal History Records Checks (CHRC).
Automatic Disqualifiers: Felony or Class A conviction, probation or community supervision; Class B misdemeanor conviction, probation or community supervision within the previous 10 years (from the date of conviction); any domestic violence conviction; dishonorable discharge from the military.
Possible Disqualifiers: History of bad debt, illegal possession or controlled substance usage and/or illegally dealing in narcotics. Use of marijuana over an extended period of time; any use of marijuana within the previous year.

WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in and around the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport and in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to a moderate to high levels of noise and with exposure to the elements. The employee spends most of their time working in a physically threatening environment that may require them to make life and death decisions for themselves and others. This position is subject to call back and overtime hours. Requires the wearing of an Airport Police Officer uniform and associated insignia and a firearm while on duty and during emergency events and call back assignments.
