We invite you to apply if you want the responsibility of caring for our animals that cannot protect and care for themselves. We are in need of weekend help, Monday help, and one additional weekday. Under general supervision to assist in maintaining the County Animal Shelter facility in a clean and sanitary condition; to monitor the physical condition of all animals being held at the animal shelter; to assist with the care, feeding and placement of animals held at the shelter; to perform a variety of clerical duties and to perform related duties as required. Example of Duties The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Provides food and water for each animal; observes food consumption to ensure animals' overall health; observes animals' behavior and physical appearance; reports illness/injuries to supervisory personnel.
  • Properly cleans and disinfects cages and kennels; exercises animals; replaces bedding, toys, and litter pans; maintains a clean and safe environment at all times
  • Assists Animal Control Officers with euthanasia of animals in emergency situations.
  • Receives and releases animals at the County Animal Shelter facility.
  • Makes regular inspections of animals and shelter equipment.
  • Report incidents of sick and injured animals and/or equipment malfunctions to superiors.
  • Assists with emergency treatment of sick and injured animals.
  • Keeps and maintains records and filing system regarding impounded animals, animals under quarantine and dog licenses.
  • Promotes advertising of adoptable animals.
  • Provides information and assists members of the public, including individuals who may be angry, hostile, or distraught, in search of lost or adoptable pets according to established laws and departmental procedures.
  • Answers inquiries from the public, both over the counter and by telephone, on laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to animal control and the animal shelter
  • Collects fees and issues licenses.
  • Types letters, notes, reports, and warrants and other statistical data; performs other related clerical duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsThe following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.Knowledge of:Proper care and feeding of domestic animals; basic emergency treatment of sick and injured domestic animals; modern office procedures, correct English usage, spelling, and grammar.Ability to:Recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior; learn to recognize those disease symptoms commonly found in dogs and cats; recognize distinguishing characteristics of different breeds of dogs and cats; care for and safely handle domestic animals so as to avoid injury to persons or animals; deal with the general public in a courteous manner; learn departmental procedures, applicable county ordinances and State laws covering the control and protection of animals; express oneself both verbally and in writing in a clear and logical manner; type 45 w.p.m., file and keep records; write clear and concise reports; work effectively under general supervision; and operate modern office equipment.TRAINING AND EDUCATION:Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Equivalent to graduation from high school and demonstrated experience in the handling /care of domestic animals; six months clerical experience. Qualifying Classifications: Crime Scene Specialist/Property Room Manager, Deputy Probation Officer I/II/III, Correctional Cook I/II, Correctional Technician, Correctional Officer, Correctional Corporal, Correctional Sergeant, Dispatcher Clerk, Sr. Dispatcher, and Animal Control Officer I/II/III. The County shall pay a two hundred dollar and four cent ($200.04) per calendar year uniform maintenance allowance to Animal Care Specialist.Professional Time Off: 80 hours annually, prorated to 40 hours if hired after July 1st. Qualifying Classifications: Deputy District Attorney I/II/III/IVExtra-Hire:Extra-hire employees are not eligible for step advances, vacation, seniority rights, holiday pay or other certain employee benefits. They are entitled to 24 hours of sick leave per year and eligilbe for the county's CORE Medical plan but not eligible for dental or vision insurance. Vacation days: 0 - 3 complete years = 80 hours per year. After 6 months you can take your first week.3 - 10 complete years = 120 hours per year10 years+ = 160 per yearHolidays: 14 paid holidays per year.Life Insurance through ReliaStar: $50,000.00 County paid. After 65 years of age, pays out 65%, after 70 years of age ReliaStar pays out 32.5%.Sick Leave: 12 days annual sick leave accrual with unlimited accumulation.Sick leave is accrued at 3.69 hours for each full 80 hours of payroll period.60 hours of sick leave can be used for immediate family, parent spouse, child or sibling.Merit: After successfully completing twenty-six (26) pay periods, a 3.5% merit increase may be granted.
