Job DescriptionThe McConnell Group (TMG), www.themccgroup.com, a health sciencecompany, has an opening for a full-time ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR toprovide support at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. PIADC is locatedjust off the northeastern tip of New York's Long Island and is accessedby ferry boat from either Orient, NY or Old Saybrook, CT. This positionsupports the Department of Homeland Security's Research and DevelopmentProgram for vaccine studies by caring for large animals in accordancewith established procedures. The Animal Care Supervisor is expected tobe on site from approximately 6:15AM to 2:45PM, Monday-Friday. The hoursmay shift slightly depending on ferry departure site and inclementweather. This is a salaried, 40 hour per week position.Candidates are not eligible if they own or work with cloven-hoofedanimals, pigs, and chickens outside of PIADC due to biosecurityrequirements. The only type of livestock that can be privately owned orworked with is horses.Position Duties:1. Ensure that animals are cared for and maintained in accordance withthe Animal Welfare Regulations, U.S. Public Health Service Policy onthe Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for theCare and Use of Laboratory Animals.2. Supervise and direct daily activities of employees to ensure thatall required functions are carried out appropriately, includingreceiving animals, feeding and watering, sanitation and cleaning,handling and restraint, health surveillance, equipment maintenance,supply inventories, animal manipulations, laboratory procedures, andother contract-related duties.3. Define and provide adequate support to meet research investigator'stechnical and husbandry needs.4. Follow-up on staff schedules to meet routine and emergency needs ofthe animals.5. Ensure appropriate staff technical training is performed to includesupervision and evaluation.6. Promote AALAS certification and career development opportunitiesamongst employees.7. Provide direction and mentorship for employees. Promote a positivework culture in accordance with TMG's policies. Foster an inclusiveand supportive team.8. Assist in developing and updating training programs, track staffprogress, and cross-train staff to minimize disruptions when thereis a vacancy.9. Develop a thorough understanding and provide revisions as needed tofacility Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep abreast ofchanges to SOPs.10. Ensure that all SOPs, quality assurance guidelines, and protocolsare adhered to.11. Report any abnormal conditions of the animals or the facility toappropriate personnel.12. Contribute to monthly progress reports.13. Provide oral or written reports, records, charts, logs, schedules,and inventories to appropriate personnel as requested or required bythe contract.14. Communicate needs for facility equipment, logistical support, andmanagement to appropriate personnel.15. Receive and execute notices, directions, and instructions fromProgram Management.16. In rare emergencies, be available after hours, weekends, andholidays as needed.Qualifications:1. BA or BS in Animal Science or related science required or 5 years oflaboratory animal experience2. 3 years' experience in a supervisory role3. Fundamental knowledge of animal research facility operations, animalbehavior, and species-specific requirements4. AALAS LATG eligible and obtained within 12 months of hire5. Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification preferred6. Ability to manage and supervise personnel7. Ability to maintain operation and quality control8. Must have training experience9. Must have computer program proficiency such as MS Office products10. Must have a proficient technical vocabulary11.
