JOB OBJECTIVE: Performs routine and complex public safety work in the enforcement of Animal Services Ordinances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Responds to complaints regarding violations of Animal Services ordinances, writes and issues warnings and/or citations to owners of animals in violation of the City of Sherwood Animal Care and Control Ordinance.
* Appears in court to testify regarding Animal Services violations.
* Operates a light duty truck for patrolling and surveying.
* Required to work on weekends as needed; must be available to be on-call seven days a week, nights, and holidays, in rotation with other officers.
* Uses humane traps, snare pole, nets, and other equipment in the course of their duties as to handle the animal in the most humane manner possible.
* Removes dead, injured, or dangerous animals from streets/residential premises
* Feeds, medicates, and cleans animals as needed.
* Maintains records and files of the animal shelter and the animals housed there; compiles a variety of data regarding Animal Services; prepares daily, monthly, and annual reports of activities. Logs all incidents concerning Animal Services activities.
* Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
* Process adoptions, reclaims, licenses and renewals, and any other required administrative duties including computer operations.
* Custodial and kennel duties as required.
* Selects and euthanizes animals in the shelter as needed.
* Perform other duties as assigned and/or required.
Qualifications
High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area e.g., animal services, law enforcement, etc., plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Either present a Certificate of Training for Animal Euthanasia or successfully complete training offered by the Animal Services Department of the City of Sherwood. Must meet the requirements to receive a Euthanasia Technician Certificate for controlled substance registration from Arkansas Department of Health Pharmacy Services. Additional Skills Some knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; working knowledge of animal restraint, behavior, and care techniques. Have an understanding of disease control and prevention. Ability to lift or work with larger animals. Ability to learn the city's geography. Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver's License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position. Must be available to respond to dispatched calls within one hour while on-call. Ability to effectively communicate on a one-on-one basis with others. Ability to maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with other employees, department officials and the public. Ability to report to work each scheduled day, and on time.
