ANIMAL SHELTER ATTENDANT / ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER, Grade 61 – Candidate will be responsible for implementing Wilkes County Animal Control procedures in collection, care and disposal methods which includes euthanasia by lethal injection. Work is performed in accordance with County and State laws governing Animal Control and requires independent judgement and initiative.

Individual will be cross trained to handle duties as described for an Animal Control Officer as well as duties performed as a shelter attendant. A varied schedule will be followed and will include weekends. An employee in this position performs a variety of duties associated with the care and maintenance of the animal shelter. Work requires that the employee keep animal containment areas clean and sanitized; encourage adoptions and reunite owners with lost animals; maintain the facility building; and ensure the safety and health of the animals within the facility.

Employees feed and care for the animals housed in the shelter, but must also select and euthanize animals on an as needed basis. Work also requires the employee to maintain supplies and equipment and necessary records. The employee may serve in an on-call capacity after hours and as back up for other officers.

Candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, a criminal background check, and a valid driver's license. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of animal control work and must be in good physical condition, able to lift 100 pounds. Hiring rate: $34,008.
