Research Animal Technician Job Description
Job Brief
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Research Animal Technician to join our team.
This role involves caring for laboratory animals used in scientific research, including feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and providing medical care.
You will also assist researchers in their work, ensuring that all procedures comply with ethical guidelines and regulations.

Responsibilities
- Provide routine care for laboratory animals including feeding, cleaning cages, and monitoring health and well-being
- Administer medications, treatments, and special diets as directed
- Assist with breeding and weaning protocols
- Observe animals for signs of illness or distress and report findings
- Assist researchers with experimental procedures
- Ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations and ethical guidelines
- Maintain accurate and detailed animal records
- Perform routine facility maintenance tasks
- Coordinate with veterinary staff for animal health concerns
- Monitor and maintain the health and welfare of laboratory animals.
- Perform routine animal care tasks such as feeding, weighing, and bathing animals.
- Carry out health checks and administer medication under the guidance of a veterinarian.
- Maintain animal housing, ensuring it is clean, sanitary, and meets the animals' needs.
- Assist in breeding and rearing of laboratory animals.
- Observe and record animal behaviour and report any abnormal behavior or health issues to a veterinarian.
- Assist in the preparation of animals for scientific studies, ensuring they are handled and treated humanely.
- Comply with all applicable laws and regulations regarding the treatment and care of laboratory animals.
- Maintain accurate records of animal care, treatment, and observations.
- Handle and restrain animals in a safe, ethical manner.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year's Experience as an Animal Technician, Vet Tech, or similar role
- Rodent experience required (Rats and mice)
- Familiarity with animal behavior and care
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment
- Excellent observational and record-keeping skills
- Ability to handle animals with patience and compassion
- Commitment to ethical animal treatment and welfare
- High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in Animal Science, Biology, or related field is advantageous
- Professional certification (e.g., AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification) is desirable
