Job Description

The Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences is seeking applicants for an assistant/associate director of advising*. This full-time position will be a key member of the Undergraduate Academic Affairs team in the college, a diverse organization that includes over 4,000 students in more than 40 majors.

This position collaborates with the Director of Advising on strategic advising initiatives and provides primary academic support for students related to academic interventions and academic eligibility. Additionally, this position will coordinate all aspects of the College's transfer credit needs and serve in a leadership capacity by supporting College-wide events. As and if needed, this position may also assist with academic advising and first-year experience course instruction.

* Position level will be dependent on the selected candidate's education and experience related to the role.

Required Qualifications

? Master's degree in education, student development or affairs, higher education, counseling, or a related field

? Extensive prior work experience in a student-focused higher educational setting

? Ability to work both independently and with a team in a fast-paced environment

? Thorough understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the ability to practice a high level of confidentiality and discretion regarding academic records

? Prior experience in, knowledge of, or familiarity with supporting students and their family members, faculty, and staff who identify with historically and continuously underrepresented, underserved, and/or minoritized groups

? Strong computer literacy skills, particularly in electronic files and database management

? High attention to detail and accuracy in one's work

? Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

? Extensive prior work experience in academic advising, career advising, or counseling within a higher educational setting

? Experience with developing, implementing, and/or leading programs focused on undergraduate student success

? Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze data for identifying trends and needs for academic programming and intervention strategies

? Experience using student information systems, such as Banner and Navigate

? Knowledge of, familiarity with, or experience in one or more of the academic disciplines housed within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences

? Familiarity with student development and/or academic advising theories or competencies

? Membership in (or a modeling of the core values of) NACADA or other student-focused professional associations
