Job Description :

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with expertise in experimental atmospheric chemistry. The appointee will complement and expand existing disciplines such as aerosols, air quality, chemistry and climate interactions, convection, greenhouse gas flux, and environmental justice and will collaborate in numerical simulations.

Our department faculty engage in teaching, research, and service to the University, state, and the broader community. We seek a colleague who will expand a vibrant, externally funded research program within the department. The experimental atmospheric chemistry ecosystem includes a wet lab, instrumented vehicles, research aircraft use, and instrumented research/monitoring sites. The selected candidate will teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor undergraduate and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students, and provide intellectual leadership in curriculum improvement and developing advanced courses. Our department's close relationship with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and UMD's Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) provides faculty and students a ready infrastructure for multidisciplinary research with NASA, NOAA, and UMD's Departments of Geology and Geographical Sciences as well as the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Additionally, university-wide initiatives strengthening and growing UMD's climate portfolio through Grand Challenge grants and new investments advancing multidisciplinary research should provide the successful applicant with a nurturing environment to build a world-class research program.

Our strong preference is to recruit an Assistant Professor, but the Associate Rank will be considered for exceptional candidates. Minimum qualifications include earned Ph.D. in atmospheric science, chemistry, or closely related field. Applicants should submit the following: (1) a Cover Letter describing their interest in the position (1 page); (2) Curriculum Vitae that includes a list of all refereed publications; (3) Teaching Statement (maximum 2 pages); (4) Research Statement (maximum 3 pages); and (5) Names and contact information of three persons who can provide letters of reference.

Discussion of specific efforts to support diverse populations in STEM within the research and teaching statements is strongly encouraged.
