Job DetailsJob Location Eastside House Settlement - Bronx, NY DescriptionPosition Title Assistant Cook Classification Non-Exempt, Full time Reports to Cook, Program Director or (Coordinator in Directors absence) Program Older Adults Site/Location East Side House Settlement Melrose Senior Center, Paterson Senior Center, Borinquen Senior Center JOB DESCRIPTIONSummary/ Objective East Side Houses Senior Citizens program meets the needs of older adults by providing a variety of social, protective and supportive services in a non-medical care setting. The program improves the quality of life for seniors in the community by offering opportunities for personal achievement, social engagement and community participation. East Side Houses Senior Citizens program includes nutrition education, a congregate meal program, counseling, educational activities, transportation assistance and benefits assistance. Recreational activities that address the cultural diversity, health and safety of seniors are also incorporated into the program, such as bingo, dominoes, monthly trips, special events, arts and crafts, health screenings, walking club, computer club, Facebook club and birthday parties. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Essential FunctionsDuties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • All meal service and all daily kitchen operations.
  • Set up steam table, serving counter and lift/place food trays onto table (approx. 20lbs each).
  • Maintain daily Food Catering Log, and food temperature.
  • Document all inventory.
  • Assists in the preparation of meals using established production procedures and systems.
  • Determines amount and type of food and supplies required using production systems.
  • Ensures availability of supplies and food or approved substitutions in adequate time for preparation.
  • Complies with established sanitation standards, personal hygiene and health standards.
  • Observes proper food preparation and handling techniques.
  • Stores food properly and safely, marking the date and item.
  • Reports necessary equipment repair and maintenance to supervisor.
  • Assists in daily preparation of all food served following standard recipes and special diet orders.
  • Assists in the planning of food production to coordinate with meal serving hours so that excellence, quality, temperature and appearance of food are preserved.
  • Apportions food for serving.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean at all times; cleans and maintains equipment used in food preparation.
  • Completes food temperature checks before service.
  • Cover for Cook & Kitchen Aide at other centers when needed.

QualificationsWork Environment This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as an oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer and chefs' knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, fire and noise. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures. Travel Often. This role coordinates meals between our three (3) Older Adults sites. Required Clearances COVID Vaccination Required Work Schedule This is a full-time position, scheduled to work thirty-five (35) hours per week. Monday through Friday, for an 8-hour day and occasional weekends and holidays. Days and hours of work will range within and to cover the shift of operations from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Days/hours subject to change based on ESH's program needs. Requisite Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma preferred.
  • Must have a qualifying NYC Food Protection Certificate.
  • Knowledge of nutritional portion control.
  • Knowledge of NYC Department of Health/Sanitation regulations.
  • Have an understanding of the Elderly Population with the ability to communicate effectively with them in a caring non-prejudice manner.
