If you need assistance with this or any other matter, please contact us at [email protected]:The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention reports to the Senior Director of Academic Advising and is responsible for successfully implementing, managing, and assessing first-year advising on East Texas A&M campus. The Assistant Director position serves as a central resource and contact for first-year student advisors. In coordination with Academic Advising leadership, the Assistant Director ensures all first-year advisors are trained and equipped to provide undergraduate students with the highest quality advisement possible. This position possesses up-to-date information on East Texas A&M academic colleges, works closely with Orientation, facilitates pathways towards degree completion in coordination with colleges, and recommends standardized advisement practices. The Assistant Director will also serve on assigned committees and/or work groups to ensure they are knowledgeable about activities and information that impact the advising unit.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:* Manage activities related to the first-year academic advising program, including determining advisor/advisee caseloads, ratios, and student assignments.* Supervises the day-to-day operations of the first-year advising program. Provides guidance and direction to staff involved in department services and programs.* Serve as a Lead Advisor and advises students as needed. Cross-train in multiple majors and disciplines and assumes a caseload as needed. Meet with prospective students and parents and provides general University information.* Hire and supervises the First- Year Undergraduate Advisors. Develops and implements onboard training, cross-training, professional development opportunities, and continuous feedback to advisors through the evaluation process.* Evaluate effectiveness and efficiency of advisement delivered by first-year undergraduate advisors to students. Conduct data analysis projects; implement assessment initiatives designed to enrich advising and case management.* Compile and present data informed proposals and recommendations regarding immediate and long-range planning for advising and retention efforts.* Develop and lead retention-based outreach programs to currently enrolled students in coordination with division leadership.* Coordinate advising assignments with a focus on opportunities to continually improve student communication, connections with advisors, and proactive outreach program to provide support and assess retention-based outcomes.* Serves on management team with Senior Director and Directors. Represents the department, division, or University on various committees.* Participates in developing departmental strategic plans based on department goals.* Participates in planning, directing, and coordinating operational or procedural matters to meet department goals and objectives.* Develops, implements, coordinates, and evaluates programs.* Monitors compliance with all unit, department, University, and government standards, policies, and procedures.* Provides leadership for department along with and in absence of the Senior Director and Directors.* Provides supervision and guidance to a team or departmental sub-unit(s).This document represents the major duties, responsibilities, and authorities of this job, and is not intended to be a complete list of all tasks and functions. Other duties may be assigned.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:* Education: Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.* Experience: Six years of related experience.* Knowledge / Skills: Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits. Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.* Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Ability to travel.* Licensing/Professional Certifications: None* Physical Requirements: None* Other Requirements: NonePREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:Master's Degree. Three or more years advising experience. Previous supervision experience.SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:Full time staff, student workers, and graduate assistants.All positions are security-sensitive.
