Job Description The Metro desk of The New York Times is looking for an assistant editor to help shape its daily coverage by overseeing the work of a team of reporters. This editor would play a key role in selecting, assigning and editing breaking news stories, features and mid-range enterprise, as well as overseeing lines of coverage of ongoing stories relevant to their team. This is an excluded, hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities:
  • You will manage a team of reporters.
  • You will oversee Live coverage of major breaking news events on their reporters' beats.
  • You will collaborate with photo, data, graphics and audio journalists to deliver high-impact digital stories.
  • You will generate ideas for news and enterprise, not just for their reporters but for the desk as a whole.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Metro Head Editor.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 10+ years' experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization
  • Editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment
  • Experience managing reporters
  • Digital skills that show a willingness to experiment and try new ways to connect with readers
  • Demonstrated metabolism to run breaking news coverage and the focus to deliver slow-developing enterprise.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • An openness to trying new story-telling approaches
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $150,000.00 and $176,000.00.
