Posting Details Position Information Position Title Assistant Farm Manager - FT Department Agriculture Location Beatrice Job Category Support Staff Job Type FT Posting Number 01917 Position End Date Position Summary Information General Description of Position Under the general direction and supervision of the Farm Manager, the Assistant Farm Manager is responsible for the completion of the day-to-day activities of the SCC production farm and land lab. Duties will be scheduled by the Farm Manager and coordinated with the Ag Faculty and Staff. The Assistant Farm Manager regularly works with Students while providing a safe and supportive learning environment. This is a full-time regular position and the Assistant Farm Manager is required to live on SCC's Agriculture Center property. An unfurnished house with 3 bedrooms and 2 car garage is provided. Essential Functions The Assistant Farm manager is responsible for the completion of all College farm operations including, but not limited to:
Provide a first point of contact to entities inside and outside of SCC for emergencies such as livestock out, facility (storm damage, severe weather, etc.), or infrastructure failure (loss of power, water, heat, fans, etc.). Ensure the livestock facilities are kept in a clean and organized state that promotes animal welfare and student learning opportunities. Operation of agricultural equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner at all times of the year including, but not limited to, planting, harvest, pesticide/herbicide application, haying, and other ag activities. On and off highway use of a semi-truck and trailer for moving grain and other ag products will also be necessary. Coordinate with the Farm Manager, part-time, and Student workers to ensure coverage of chores and other daily activities. This includes the responsibility of ensuring these duties are covered on evenings, weekends, and holidays with or without student worker availability. Participate as needed in regular meetings with Faculty and Staff to coordinate Student Lab activities and Classroom Projects with Ag Production activities. Provide as needed for the transportation, receipt, unloading, storage, and care of Ag inputs such as livestock and their associated feed, vaccines, nutrients, hay, tack/gear; fence upkeep, repair, and replacement supplies; crop inputs such as seed, fertilizer, and chemicals; equipment and machinery repair and maintenance; and fuel, tires, and other ag-related supplies. Coordinate with Faculty and Staff for the transport of Ag Produce such as Livestock, Grain, Feed, Hay, etc. Coordinate with the Ag Faculty for recordkeeping and precision agriculture data collection to be used in tracking farm or livestock productivity and for the instruction of students in industry best practices. Supervise the day-to-day activities of student employees. Interact with colleagues, students, staff, supervisors, and the public in a manner that will project a positive image of the Ag Program and the College. This includes support of SCC Policies, Goals, and Strategic Plans. Marginal Functions Coordinate with the Farm Manager and Faculty to schedule Student worker employees for farm and livestock operations. Coordinate with the Farm Manager regarding Crop Insurance, FSA, and other State and Federal Government requirements, Environmental requirements, maintenance, updates, and improvements for the College land lab, buildings, and property. Coordinate with the Farm Manager to work within the annual budget for the Ag Production Cost Center. Provide input to the Farm Manager regarding inventories of Ag supplies such as livestock, grain, chemicals, seed, hay, equipment, machinery, vehicles, etc. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Valid driver's license and insurable under College insurance policy. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. This includes the use of email, text, and 2-way radio as well as communicating in person with groups and teams of individuals. Ability to operate farm equipment and vehicles. Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move up to 60 pounds. Ability to climb under, on, and around various types of ag equipment for the purpose of regular inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and minor repairs. Ability to walk on uneven or difficult terrain such as feed lots, livestock pens, fields, and pastures. Knowledge and experience in the practical application of low-stress animal handling procedures and best practices. Ability to use basic computer skills. The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma and four (4) years of experience as a farm hand or similar duties in an Agriculture Production or Livestock Production environment. Valid driver's license and insurable under College insurance policy. Must currently hold, or must obtain within 12 months of hire, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Desired Qualifications Associate Degree in Agriculture Production, Livestock Production, Ag Business, Ag Education, or a directly related field of study and two (2) years of recent experience in an Agriculture Production or Livestock Production environment. Industry-recognized certification(s) related to Livestock Management, Health, Reproduction, and/or Handling. (i.e.: BQA, PQA Plus, etc.) Industry-recognized certification(s) related to Agronomy, Land Management, Crop Production, and/or Precision Agriculture practices.
