Head of School at The Girls' Middle School

The Assistant Head of School is a key member of the Senior Administration Team and works in close collaboration with the Head of School and other stakeholders to support all aspects of the GMS community and experience. This role is both strategic and operational, focusing on academic leadership, faculty support, and the implementation of the school's mission and vision. The Assistant Head of the School serves as a champion of progressive education and inclusive practices, ensuring that GMS remains a vibrant and dynamic place for students and staff alike.

The Assistant Head of School plays a pivotal role in the leadership of the school's daily operations, curricular program, and faculty development. Major responsibilities include:

Academic Leadership:
  • Leading implementation of key programmatic strategic initiatives to further the school's innovative and inquiry-based approach. A main area of focus in the near term is expanding and deepening community engagement and partnerships.
  • Partnering with the Teaching and Learning Facilitator to refine processes and policies that enrich teaching and learning experiences, specific to professional growth and evaluation.
  • Lead grade-level and subject-level teams guiding and supporting teachers in developing, assessing, and choosing curriculum.
  • Play a lead role in supporting the accreditation process.
Faculty Development:
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, supervision, and mentoring of faculty, fostering a culture of professional growth and engagement.
  • Promote faculty goal-seeking and development through meaningful evaluations, feedback, and professional learning opportunities.
  • Ensure equity and inclusion in faculty recruitment and retention strategies, addressing the unique challenges of the Bay Area's high-cost living environment.
Operational Management:
  • Partner with the Head of School on managing and evaluating teaching schedules, academic calendars, and the school's organizational structure.
  • Oversee auxiliary programs such as Intersession, Entrepreneurial events, and student travel experiences, ensuring alignment with GMS's mission.
  • Actively participate in strategic decision-making and operational planning as part of the Senior Administration Team.
Community Engagement:
  • Act as a visible and accessible leader within the GMS community, fostering strong relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Lead and support parent/family community events such as Back to School Nights, parent education programs, the spring Academic Fair, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the GMS mission and values, strengthening the school's connections within the broader community.
