Who we are?Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. On a daily basis, we are committed to making this vision of a democratic, pluralistic, and progressive school a reality.Position SummaryEthical Culture seeks an Assistant Principal of Student Life beginning in July 2025. The successful candidate will join an administrative team that includes the Principal and the Assistant Principal of Academic Life. The Assistant Principal of Student Life is an experienced pedagogical leader with a deep understanding of progressive pedagogy and developmentally appropriate practice. The AP of Student Life is responsible for overseeing the social emotional development of each child. This includes building community and supporting an environment where the whole child is a priority. The AP of Student Life supports colleagues, families, and students in promoting the dynamic, child-centered experience at Ethical Culture. The AP partners with multiple constituencies to foster the intellectual, social, emotional, ethical, physical, and artistic development of all students at Ethical Culture. The hiring range for this position is $140,000-$170,000. When determining the salary for an offer, ECFS considers factors including, but not limited to: the scope and responsibilities of the position, internal peer equity, key skills required for the role, the candidate's work experience, education and training, as well as market and organizational considerations.Please note that this is an onsite role and not performed remotely. Ethical Culture Fieldston School retains its right to modify job duties in accordance with changing operational needs.ResponsibilitiesSpecific responsibilities of the AP will include:
- Supporting faculty in developing integrated curriculum to support our social studies, ethics and social emotional learning (SEL) goals;
- Ensuring social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, service and ethics are at the heart of the curriculum;
- Collaborating with the wider admin team, to align SEL curriculum vertically and horizontally in grades Pre-k through 5th;
- Supervising the placement of students into classes in grades Pre-K through 5th;
- Collaborating with the school's guidance counselor to develop and implement behavior plans in need of SEL support;
- Providing support for teachers and students around behavioral/social emotional needs;
- Sharing classroom teacher supervision duties with the other APs;
- Conducting formal observations and writing summative evaluations for probationary candidates and continuing faculty in an evaluation cycle;
- Collaborating with other APs and organizing appropriately differentiated professional development for teachers;
- Meeting with parents around SEL concerns and student support;
- Working with classroom teachers on classroom management;
- Leading the Fifth Grade Trip to Ashokan;
- Partnering with the principal on leading fifth to sixth grade transition events;
- Partnering with the Principal, AP for Academic Life, and the Belonging and Social Impact Lead to support student initiatives and other programs relating to diversity, equity, inclusion, multicultural education and service learning;
- Attending parent teacher conferences as needed;
- Organizing and facilitating various meetings for teachers to exchange information regarding student performance;
- Collaborating with the admin team and faculty in developing grade level expectations and benchmarks for Pre-K through 5th Grade;
- Liaising with counterparts at Fieldston Lower and Fieldston Middle;
- Fostering positive relationships with team members and various stakeholders;
- Performing other related projects, tasks, duties and serving on various committees as assigned.
Position RequirementsThe successful incumbent will possess:
- A Bachelor's degree required;
- A minimum of 5 years teaching experience and 2 years of administrative experience in a lower school setting is a plus;
- The ability to confidently collaborate and build relationships with faculty, administrators, students and parent community;
- The understanding of leading, supporting and developing a rapport with unionized faculty and staff;
- The ability to handle confidential material with discretion and possess the highest degree of integrity;
- Willingness to learn and embrace new ideas, technology and processes;
- Ability to work independently at times and also collaboratively in a group settings;
- Confidence in ability to stay calm in stressful situations that may arise;
- Ability to multi task and shift priorities without compromising on the quality of work;
- Excellent verbal, written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate initiatives, facilitate discussions and present to various levels of stakeholders;
- Ability to identify issues quickly and problem solve accordingly;
- A positive attitude, consistently taking initiative to help improve processes;
- Must be highly detailed oriented, organized and resourceful;
- Proficiency with technology (e.g Google Suite,Smartboards, etc);
- Consistency in attendance and the ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed;
- Respect and appreciation for diversity in all of its forms;
- The ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback.
