Job Summary
The Stock Development Department of Construction Management at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) invites applicants for Assistant Professor appointment, starting August 2025. We seek individuals with enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to engage students in the classroom and laboratory on subjects primarily in construction management.
Candidates are expected to have an earned doctorate or be ABD in construction management, civil engineering, or another closely related field, at the time of appointment. Clear evidence of the potential for teaching excellence is essential. Expertise is preferred in disaster resilience, smart built environment, lean construction, automation in construction, construction workforce development and welfare, and other relevant specialty complementing our existing strengths. The ideal candidate would have teaching abilities in a wide variety of subjects in construction management.
The department is housed in the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, which is dedicated to quality education, scholarship, and service. All faculty are expected to be excellent teachers who are committed to innovative delivery of instruction that results in improved student learning; to using technology, including distance learning, effectively; to participate in service activities; and to engage in a continuous and outcomes-based assessment process. Teaching assignments may be on the main campus or at off-campus sites within our region.

Job Description

* Teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment.

* Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.
* Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.
* Attends faculty and college meetings as required.
* Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
* Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.
* Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.
* Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
* Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours.
* Perform regular scholarly research and publication.
* Teaching: Teaches select construction management courses as well as more advanced courses directly related to their specific area of expertise.
* Scholarship: Demonstrates successful productivity in construction management and/or educational scholarship over time.
* Service: Performs service within the university as well as within their professional community.
* Plans and teaches assigned courses.
* Prepares syllabi, instruction materials, coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluates student work.
* Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
* Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
* Establishes a program of externally peer reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity.
* Actively serves on university committees.
* Actively participates in institutional meetings.
* Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
* Assists with the development of curriculum.
* Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
* Must work closely with the Department Chair and other faculty on assessment and evaluation tasks necessary for the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) accreditation of the Construction Management program.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications
* An earned Doctorate in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
* ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2025. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at the Lecturer level on a fixed contract.
* Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications
* Preferred areas of expertise include disaster resilience, resilient infrastructure, lean construction, construction workforce development and welfare, and/or other cutting-edge construction management topics.
* Professional registration, licensing or the ability to become licensed, or certifications related to the construction discipline.
* A rank-appropriate record of educational and/or scientific publication in scholarly journals (pertinent to one or more of the areas of interest listed above) and/or a record of externally funded research.
* Relevant professional experience in the United States construction industry or comparable international experience.

* Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).
* Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals.
* Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high level questioning skills.
* Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.
* Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g. Face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).
* Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.
* The ability to collaborate with related disciplines and to establish relationships internally as well as to successfully develop relationships and interact with external industry partners and the southwest Florida community.
* An ability to communicate effectively, work in a highly collaborative faculty environment, conduct themselves professionally, and perform appropriate service functions at the program, school, and university level.
* Ability to deal effectively with a various range of learners and to use information technology as a pedagogical and professional tool.
* Ability in collaborating both within and outside of the university in the development of both an undergraduate and graduate research program and in innovative and effective delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. A commitment to collaborate with other faculty to develop a shared vision of the future.
