The Center for Scholar Development is the home to the four campus TRIO programs: Upward Bound, Student Support Services-Regular, Student Support Services-STEM, the McNair Scholars; and the college's Preparatory Enrollment Program. The mission of the CSD department is to support educational pathways in an affirming environment for first-generation scholars in their pursuit of post-secondary success.
Primary Purpose
The Assistant Project Director will assist the director with all aspects of the TRIO Upward Bound Program administration in the Center for Scholar Development. The Upward Bound Program serves 150 students each year. The Assistant Project Director will ensure that the advising and support services align with the U.S. Department of Education requirements. The Assistant Project Director will provide academic, and career advising for eligible students and coordinate the work/mentoring component of the summer program. The Assistant Project Director will create a structure of academic tutoring support for participants, which may include working with campus partners as well as hiring, training, and evaluating tutors to facilitate academic support. This position will also ensure the regular monitoring and maintenance of the program database (Blumen), which includes updated progress notes, eligibility information at intake, and tracking academic standing on a semester basis. The Assistant Project Director will be responsible for coordinating recruitment aligned with grant objectives. The Assistant Project Director will make the appropriate recommendations to the Project Director (based on advisor and student feedback) on how to continually improve program services.
Essential Duties
* Assisting in planning, implementing, administering, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the various specific activities, functions, and services of the Upward Bound Program, including operating policies and procedures. Participate in the development and modification of program goals, objectives, services, activities, and policies in accordance with student needs, institutional objectives, resources, and funding agency requirements.
* Oversee the tutoring component of the Upward Bound Program and ensure that students have access to academic support through monitoring performance and grades. Document student attendance in the tutoring program and work with faculty and staff to ensure effective academic services are being delivered to students. As needed, implement a system of tutoring evaluation to get student feedback and make appropriate recommendations for improvement.
* Supervise, manage, and regularly monitor advising staff's student records in the Blumen database to ensure that each participant has detailed and up-to-date services and that monthly service benchmarks are met.
* Provide personal and group advising for an assigned caseload of Upward Bound scholars (individually and in groups with participants in the target high schools and on the campus of Rhode Island College during the summer).
* Use advising strategies that motivate scholars, provide information and assistance that supports & enhances their personal and academic success in high school, and help them meet the future demands of higher education.
* Implement and reinforce the program's motivation initiatives, including an established Code of Behavior.
* Establish and maintain a viable working relationship with the parents/guardians of participants, program alums, target schoolteachers, staff, administrators, community agencies, and college and university admissions staff.
* Design and conduct student development workshops, seminars, and other educational activities.
* Develop recruitment informational sessions/events in collaboration with the Upward Bound advisors, promote Upward Bound's mission, and assist with recruiting, selecting, and enrolling participants.
* Represent Upward Bound at community partner's meetings and committees.
* Assist the Program Director with training new full and part-time advising staff and graduate assistants.
* The Assistant Project Director will assist the Project Director with submitting the annual performance report (APR) to the U.S. Department of Education and ensure accurate records are kept documenting tutoring and advising appointments.
* Maintain an active commitment to continued personal and professional development, as well as advocate for first-generation and low-income students.
Occasional Duties
* Work non-standard hours as needed.
* Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Student Success.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
* Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to issues that concern low-income, first-generation, and at-risk college-bound youth.
* Ability to work with an ethnically and racially diverse student population, alumni, and staff.
* Demonstrated competency in using contemporary computer software in an educational environment, such as Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of federally funded TRIO programs
* Willingness to pursue appropriate and ongoing professional development.
* Ability to work non-standard hours as needed.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Secondary Education, Human Development, or a related field.
* At least four years of experience in similar work settings and with similar populations, as well as professional experience advising students and coordinating educational programs for urban youth.
Preferred Qualifications
* Master's degree in Student Personnel Services, Counseling or Education.
* Knowledge of TRIO programs.
* Knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
