Summary of Work The State Historical Society of North Dakota tells the diverse stories of North Dakota to educate and entertain visitors. This is a unique opportunity to work with a dynamic team of passionate professionals that manages the state museum's collections. Our museum collection contains about 80,000 objects including natural history, fine art, ethnography, and history collections. The position is located at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum in beautiful Bismarck, ND. The Assistant Registrar is a full-time position. This professional works closely with and reports to the Head of Curatorial Services on daily operations related to the production and management of artifact collections records. This position:
  • Contacts potential donors for the museum collections, prepares donation proposals for, and is a member of, the museum collections committee.
  • Accessions recent acquisitions into the museum collection.
  • Produces object rating lists for the museum collections committee and follows-through with deaccessioning of appropriately rated collections objects.
  • Prepares deaccessions for the Historical Board to review.
  • Maintains quality control of data entry in the museum database records, records filing, and state records systems.
  • Assists in facilitating and maintaining incoming and outgoing artifact loans.
  • Works with exhibit and collections management staff involving incoming exhibits.
  • Requires some travel, evening and/or weekend work, especially as pertaining to outgoing loans.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field and two years of museum registration or collections experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles, best practices, concepts, and methodology related to museum registration.
  • Familiarity with updating and maintaining museum databases and preserving collections records.
  • Familiarity with Federal regulations and their relationship with museum collections.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in working with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative environment.
  • Must be able to lift and move at least forty pounds and delicate objects.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or portable stairs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in museum studies or related field.
  • Experience facilitating artifact loans (incoming and outgoing).
  • Experience working with Re:Discovery museum software databases.
  • Experience interacting with the public in a service role.
  • Ability to manage a diverse workload.
