We serve our residential, commercial, fleet, and government customers through our 150+ retail store locations in eighteen states, supported by our corporate offices (in Mount Airy, NC, and Cobden, IL), distribution centers, and strategically located manufacturing facilities.Job Summary:The Assistant Vehicle Mechanic is based at the Leonard Cobden, IL manufacturing facility, with operations in the U.S., and has overall responsibility for supporting the efficient operation and maintenance of a diverse fleet of vehicles, conducting routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to ensure optimal vehicle safety and performance. This position reports directly to the Fleet Manager and does not have direct reports.Job Responsibilities:
  • Assists in performing routine maintenance tasks, inspections, and repairs on a variety of fleet vehicles, including but not limited to cars, trucks, vans, and specialized equipment.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical issues, performing necessary repairs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the fleet.
  • Supports the implementation of preventive maintenance schedules, including oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and other scheduled services.
  • Conducts regular inspections to identify potential issues and address them proactively to prevent breakdowns and extend vehicle lifespan.
  • Maintains accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including service logs, parts used, and any additional notes.
  • Collaborates with the fleet management team to ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists in managing inventory levels of spare parts and materials required for routine maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinates with suppliers to procure necessary parts and ensure availability to minimize vehicle downtime.
  • Assists in conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicles meet safety standards and identify any potential issues.
  • Collaborates with drivers and other team members to address reported concerns and maintain open communication regarding vehicle conditions.
  • Follows all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Stays informed about industry best practices and safety standards, incorporating them into daily maintenance activities.
  • Participates in training programs to stay updated on the latest advancements in automotive technology and maintenance practices.
  • Collaborates with senior mechanics and fleet management to enhance your skills and knowledge in vehicle maintenance.
  • Assists in responding to emergency breakdowns and providing on-the-spot repairs when needed to minimize disruptions to fleet operations.
  • Collaborates with the fleet management team to implement strategies for reducing the frequency of emergency repairs.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Education/Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in automotive mechanics is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in automotive maintenance, with exposure to fleet vehicle maintenance considered a strong asset.
