We are currently seeking an Associate Claims/Coverage Counsel to join our growing team in either our Woodbury, NY or New York City offices.

Exercise independent judgement and discretion while performing the outlined responsibilities and the essential functions and basic duties of this job. The Associate Claims Counsel will exercise independent judgment and discretion when performing associated responsibilities that are aligned and directed to the continued success of the RMS department, working closely with Producers, Executives, Account Executives and clients acting as in-house counsel to SterlingRisk on insurance coverage related issues, as well as general litigation matters involving clients.

Essential Functions & Basic Duties

  • Responsible for addressing all client/carrier coverage issues.
  • Review of all coverage position letters received from carriers for potential dispute.
  • Review of contract documents for insureds and industry contacts.
  • Client point of contact for insurance coverage questions, claims and issues.
  • Assist CRO and Coverage Team with in-house educational seminars.
  • Work closely with Claims Department on assessing liability exposures, reserve adequacy and claim resolution strategies for liability losses.
  • Address underwriting issues when needed.
  • Consult on coverage/policy language when needed.
  • Attend prospect meetings when needed.
  • Attend Claim Reviews and other client meetings.
  • Monitor case law and insurance regulations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key vendors, counsel, and industry contacts.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of insurance coverages and regulations.
  • Computer skills and proficiency with tools such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and EPIC.
  • Strong interpersonal, decision-making, strategic planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to actively advocate on behalf of client.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Professional/Goal oriented.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Education And/or Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • J.D. Degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Admission to the Bar
  • Continuing Legal Education (based on the state of Bar admission)
  • 1+ years in Insurance Coverage law, litigation and monitoring complex insurance matters

The estimated base salary range for this full time position is $100,000 - $135,000 annually, plus benefits, and can vary based on location.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty and training. The hiring range represents the company's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
