Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will be responsible for raising funds for assigned beat areas of priority for the hospital. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of identifying, cultivating, and soliciting grants and gifts in the six and seven-figure range.

The Associate Director of Development will be supported by a shared Development Coordinator.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diversify and expand the pipeline of active corporate and foundation prospects and secure new funders while maintaining and improving existing relationships. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new corporate and foundation donors for assigned Departments in compliance with patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Effectively staff physicians, researchers, and administrative leaders of the assigned Department(s) in their development activities, meeting with them regularly to provide updates on development progress, providing research and strategies on prospects, and helping to identify new prospects.
  • Identify, cultivate, and attract future volunteer leadership for assigned department(s), building a cadre of leaders who are capable of and willing to give to and advocate on behalf of this area of excellence.
  • Work closely with the faculty of assigned Department(s) to encourage and guide their involvement in the development process from identification to solicitation.
  • Coordinate activities closely with the entire development team and support the creation of strong working relationships across the department.
  • Work successfully in a highly entrepreneurial, results-oriented, fast-paced environment where the team is proactive and focused on advancing prospects toward closing gifts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of demonstrated ability in development.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in major or principal gifts in an academic medical setting or within a healthcare organization strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record of being effective in an academic medical center, university, or other large organization.
  • The position requires a self-starter, able to work with and empower others, including prospective donors and their advisors, volunteers, and development staff.
  • Must possess advanced knowledge/skills with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database software, and scheduling/organizing software; and must have outstanding customer service skills. Raiser's Edge experience is preferred.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Appreciation for and the ability to articulate the particular mission of assigned department(s), the BWH, curriculum, and programs. Strong writing skills, including proposal writing, and excellent verbal communication skills are essential for this role.
  • The intellectual depth and experience to garner the trust and confidence of the leadership of assigned Department(s), other faculty, and administrators, as well as volunteers and patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the time of senior volunteers, academic, clinical, and administrative staff in contacts with donors, including strong preparation and good judgment.
  • Demonstrated success in personally soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts.
  • Able to provide creative and effective strategies to the major gift pipeline.
  • The ability to build bridges and positive relationships across a complex organization. Political astuteness and agility.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and work autonomously under pressure of multiple and sequential due dates.
  • Takes risks and courageously speaks with conviction.
  • Motivated to act on their own initiative.
  • Willingness to travel (although most patients/prospects/donors reside in the New England region).
