Position Summary: All work is performed in a food safety laboratory testing for the presence of common pathogens such as Salmonella and Listeria as well as other food spoilage organisms. Technologies used in the laboratory include traditional microbiology, PCR/qPCR, mass spec and advanced microbiology methods such as TEMPO. The Associate Scientist performs all work in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards. This position requires meticulous record-keeping and attention to detail.
Responsibilities: - Maintains chain of custody of customer samples from intake through to reporting.
- Performs quantitative and qualitative analyses of customer samples using various technologies (PCR/qPCR, traditional plating, TEMPO, mass spec, sequencing, biochemical assays, etc.
- Prepares microbiological media.
- Assists with laboratory organization, supply inventory, cleaning, calibration/verification/preventive maintenance of equipment/instruments.
Supplemental Data: Position interacts directly with 5 team members and indirectly with ~40 members of the larger business unit. Limited travel expectations.
Studies and Experience: - Position requires an associate's or bachelor's degree in a biological science
- 0-4 years of lab experience
Skills and Qualifications: - Previous experience with PCR, traditional microbiological methods, mass spec or library prep will be beneficial.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint is an asset.
Physical Requirements: - Ability to remain in stationary position, often standing, for prolonged periods.
- Ability to wear PPE correctly most of the day
- Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs over short distances
