Agency Overview: The Safe Center LI, Inc. (TSCLI) is the leading provider of services to victims of interpersonal violence in Nassau County. The agency provides comprehensive services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking. SUMMARY: The Legal Department at The Safe Center provides direct comprehensive legal representation and advocacy to low-income and indigent domestic violence victims and survivors of domestic/dating violence, rape/sexual abuse, stalking, trafficking, and elder abuse in family offense proceeding, paternity, custody/visitation cases, child/spousal support, divorces, immigration proceedings, and other legal matters arising out of the abuse. The attorney will provide comprehensive, holistic, direct civil legal services to victims and survivors of domestic/dating abuse, rape/sexual assault, elder abuse, stalking and human trafficking. The attorney will work as part of our legal team, assisting advocates, counselors, and pro bono attorneys. The position entails extensive advocacy and litigation, including motion practice and trials, in the Family, Supreme and Integrated Domestic Violence Courts, as well as in administrative immigration hearings and Immigration court.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The range of legal services provided for domestic violence victims runs the spectrum from legal information, referrals, advice, brief services, advocacy, and negotiation to full direct representation in litigated court matters and appearances in all Nassau County courts including Immigration court (New York City) and administrative hearings;
- Community outreach;
- Attend Nassau County Bar Association committee meetings;
- Collect, report, and maintain statistical records;
- Knowledge regarding trauma and domestic violence, women's rights and violence against women (interpersonal / family violence, sexual assault, trafficking);
- Ability to write and speak persuasively;
- Ability to perform creative legal research and advocacy;
- Conduct and attend trainings;
- Commitment to collaborative multi-cultural work; and the ability to collaborate with people in diverse settings; and
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Legal Services.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Admitted member in good standing of the New York State Bar required;
- 2-4 years of prior relevant legal experience, including litigation and trial practice;
- Family Law and/or immigration practice preferred;
- Extensive understanding of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, crime victimization, trauma, knowledge of victims' right and remedies, and cultural sensitivity and diversity is required;
- Demonstrated Public Interest law;
- English and Spanish bilingual, both written and oral is preferred;
- Proficient in Office365 and Empower DB;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Excellent public speaking skills, research, writing, analytical skills, organizational, planning and time management skills; and
- Ability to work independently, cooperatively and under pressure
HOURS, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: - Full-Time, Exempt, 35 hours per week 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. (may need to flex time to accommodate program needs);
