SUMMARY The Trainee Authorized Inspector will initially prepare for National Board A school, which will be organized by Operations Coordinator. Prior to, or after passing the A school examination, the AIA will carry out 80 hours of on the job training, in order to get AI commission. Attending R school and examination may also be required, for repair inspections. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare for National Board A school.
  • Complete 2 week National Board A school.
  • Pass the National Board A school examination
  • Complete the required 80 hours of on the job training
  • Attend National Board R school (if required)
  • Pass the National Board R school examination (if required).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:Knowledge, Skill, & Abilities
  • Knowledge and working experience of ASME Pressure Vessel and Boiler Codes
  • Meet the minimum number of credits as required by the National Board, in order to be able to sit the A school examination. See Qualification requirements listed below. Minimum number of credits - 5
  • Ability to multi-task and follow through with minimal supervision required.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills both internal and external required.
Education
  • High School diploma required, as a minimum.
  • Technical College Certificate (2 years in technical institute / course), preferred but not mandatory
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, preferred by not mandatory
  • Any other qualifications as listed in the Education Requirements table below.
Experience
  • Computer literacy required including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in the Pressure equipment industry. Minimum years of experience is dependent on education. With high school diploma only, minimum of 4 years' experience. With high school and Technical Certificate, minimum of 2 years' experience. With High school diploma and Bachelor's Degree in engineering discipline, minimum 1 years of experience. Experience as stated in experience requirement table below.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:
  • For on the job training your will be assigned to a number of Authorized Inspectors (AI), or Authorized Inspector Supervisor (AIS)
  • Once AI endorsement is received, you will be appointed as an AI, and assigned an AIS.

Travel Required
  • May be assigned to a full-time shop, or may be required to travel to clients work site. Travel may be out of town for short or long periods of time. Vehicle and valid driver's license required.
Education (1 credit minimum, 4 credits maximum)Credit Points Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering, Technology, Science, or Mathematics from and accredited institution 3 Two (2) Year Degree or Certificate in Engineering, Technology, Science, or Mathematics from an accredited institute 2 Graduation from an accredited technical school in subjects that include, but not limited to, Manufacturing, Building Construction, Construction Technology, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning, and Industrial Technology 2 Completion of an accredited Power Engineering certification program 2 Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program. For example: boilermaker, steamfitter, or pipefitter 2 Completion of an accredited military or merchant marine training program in the area of marine or stationary boilers, pressure vessels or nuclear reactors 2 Completion of Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification program from the American Welding Society, or an equivalent certification 2 Certification as an American Petroleum Institute API-510 or API-570 Inspector. 2 Completion of eighty (80) of classroom technical training in Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Piping inspection 1 Experience (1 credit minimum, 4 credits maximum) One (1) credit point may be assigned for each full year of experience associated with the pressure equipment industry in the categories below:
  • Engineering or design review.
  • Manufacturing, including fabrication methods or processes, in either shop of field.
  • Operation of Boiler(s) exceeding 50,000lbs of steam per hour total capacity.
  • Performance of repairs, alterations, or maintenance of boilers or pressure vessels.
  • Quality control systems related to boiler or pressure vessel manufacturing, repair, or alteration in either shop or field.
  • Inspection of boilers or pressure vessels, either in-service, or during construction, including either shop or field.
  • Note: Credit for concurrent experience in two (2) or more categories will be limited to experience in one (1) category, e.g. an individual who has been employed by an organization for two years as a Quality Control Manager, and during these two years is qualified as a Level II NDE Inspector, the allowable credit is only two (2) years, as both were achieved concurrently.
