Description Position at The Port Authority of NY & NJ About the Role As an automotive mechanic you will be responsible for performing skilled automotive work involving inspections, modifications, maintenance, and repairs on complex automotive and special equipment for a diverse fleet including gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles. Responsibilities Automotive Mechanics will be responsible for the following duties:
- Diagnosis and repair (including car/truck repairs, air conditioner, axle & transaxle, airbrakes)
- Auxiliary and control systems
- Inspections (mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems)
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
- Three years' journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive work involving inspection, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, and repair on complex automotive and other special equipment
- New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License (selected applicants without this license must obtain within six months of hire for continued employment)
- Valid driver license with the ability to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's (CDL) Permit with the air brakes endorsement or higher before the first day of work and will be required to obtain a Class A CDL License with endorsements within three months of employment.

Desired Qualifications
- Ability to a 40-hour week, which includes rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed and during inclement weather and emergencies.
Selection Process Qualified candidates will be assessed via a written exam and a practical exam. For this position, the following skills will be assessed: Written exam: The Automotive Mechanic Written Examination is designed to assess candidates' knowledge in the following areas:
- Combustion Engines
- Electrical Systems
- Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Systems
- Hydraulic Brake Systems
- Steering and Suspension Systems
- Light and Heavy-Duty Truck Repair
- Hybrid Vehicle Technology
- Late Model Vehicle Technology and Diagnostics
Note: Automotive Mechanic Written Exam will be waived if qualified candidates have one of the following certifications:
- Master ASE Automotive Certified in: A1 through A8 with the addition of one (1) of the following certifications: L1, A9, L2, L3.
- Master ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certified in: T1 through T8 with the addition of one (1) of the following certifications: L1, A9, L2, L3.
- Non-Master Auto Certified in: A1 through A5, and A6 or T6, and A7 or T7, and A8 with the addition of one (1) of the following certifications L1, A9, L2, L3.
- Non-Master Medium/Heavy Truck certified in: T1 through T5 and T6 or A6, and T7 or A7, and T8 with the addition of one (1) of the following certifications: L1, A9, L2, L3.

Candidates who qualify on the written exam will be eligible to be considered for the next step in the evaluation process, a Practical Examination. Practical Exam:The practical exam will measure a candidate's knowledge in areas such as:
- Mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or electrical/electronic inspection
- Diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
