Distinguishing Characteristics: This class is distinguished by its performance of a wide range of routine auto motive repair and maintenance functions. Examples of DutiesThe following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.Greases chassis; drains and refills crankcase; replaces oil and air filters; inspects and fills transmission, steering, differential with proper lubricant; checks and refills battery water and brake fluid; replaces spark plugs, fan belts, lights, etc.; changes and repairs tires; issues gas and oil; checks radiator, air pressure, and windshield washer reservoir; cleans windshield; maintains inventory of oil, lubricant, filters, batteries and selected parts; operates, picks up and delivers automotive vehicles; may perform tire changes in the field; maintains working area in a clean and safe condition. This is the first specification for the new class, AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES UTILITY WORKER, effective March 16, 1984.APPROVED: October 5, 1984 Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in automotive maintenance work. License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3). Knowledge of: common practices, tools, materials and equipment used in lubricating automotive equipment, repairing tires, minor repairs, operating a service station and other auxiliary services: arithmetic; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade. Ability to: learn to readily recognize defects in mechanical operation of vehicles and make minor repairs; use common tools, materials and equipment applicable to the trade; understand and follow oral and written instructions; follow safety rules and procedures; handle weights and loads. Health and Physical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
