DescriptionAmazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This committed group works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team works to ensure that the data center's MEP operates at 100% availability while maintaining first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.The UPS Data Center VRLA and Lithium-Ion Battery Chief Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the backup power systems, while also effectively communicating and collaborating with key stakeholders within the PDX region to align battery system operations with the overall data center objectives.Key job responsibilitiesThe key responsibilities of a Battery Services Chief Engineer include:Battery Management and Monitoring:- Oversee the installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of VRLA and Lithium-Ion battery systems.- Develop and implement battery monitoring and testing protocols to ensure optimal performance and longevity.- Analyze battery data and trends to identify potential issues and take proactive measures.- Coordinate battery replacements and upgrades as per manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.Preventive Maintenance:- Develop and implement a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for VRLA and Lithium-Ion battery systems.- Coordinate and oversee regular inspections, cleaning, and testing of battery systems.- Ensure adherence to manufacturer guidelines, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and battery performance data.Battery System Design and Integration:- Collaborate with data center design teams to ensure proper sizing, layout, and integration of battery systems.- Evaluate and recommend battery technologies based on data center requirements, load profiles, and energy efficiency goals.- Provide technical expertise and guidance on battery system installations and upgrades.Emergency Response and Incident Management:- Develop and implement emergency response plans for battery system failures or incidents.- Coordinate with data center operations teams to ensure seamless power transitions during emergencies.- Conduct post-incident analyses and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.Training and Compliance:- Develop and deliver training programs for data center personnel on battery system operations, safety, and maintenance.- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and environmental guidelines related to battery systems.- Stay up-to-date with emerging battery technologies, industry best practices, and regulatory changes.Vendor and Contractor Management:- Establish and maintain strong relationships with battery manufacturers, vendors, and service providers.- Negotiate and manage contracts for battery system installations, maintenance, and replacements.- Evaluate and select qualified vendors and contractors based on technical expertise, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.Documentation and Reporting:- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for battery systems, including technical manuals, drawings, and specifications.- Prepare and present regular performance reports, budget forecasts, and recommendations to data center management.Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:- Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations related to battery systems.- Develop and implement safety protocols for handling, storage, and disposal of batteries.- Coordinate with relevant authorities and agencies for compliance audits and certifications.Communication and Collaboration:- Effectively communicate and coordinate with the Facility Manager, Chief Engineers, and other stakeholders within the PDX region.- Provide technical updates, reports, and recommendations to relevant stakeholders regarding battery system performance, maintenance, and upgrades.- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of battery systems with other data center infrastructure components.- Represent the data center's interests in meetings, discussions, and negotiations related to battery systems and power management.Basic Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent- 4+ years of relevant work experience in a data center or other critical environment- 3+ years Electrical/mechanical experiencePreferred Qualifications- Associates or Bachelors in applicable engineering field or mechanical or electrical trades- Applicable licenses such as Operating engineering licenses such as DC II, DC III and CFC license- Stationary Engineering or Building Engineering License- Electrical or mechanical Journeyman License- NFPA 70EAmazon is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
