Job Summary:

The BCAN Patient Education, Outreach and Support Manager plays a pivotal role in coordinating and enhancing the education and support programs and services available to bladder cancer patients, caregivers, and families. The ideal candidate will have a passion for and experience designing patient education programs and resources for those affected by cancer and a strong commitment to advancing outreach initiatives in collaboration with healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and organizations.

Overview of Duties & Responsibilities. Please note this overview may not fully encompass all possible duties, as the work may evolve in response to community needs and organizational priorities.

Education Management:

  • In coordination with the education leadership team, develop, implement, and manage comprehensive education programs and resources for bladder cancer patients and their caregivers, designed to provide valuable information about diagnosis, treatment options, coping strategies, and resources.
  • Create and maintain up-to-date educational materials such as brochures, fact sheets, webinars, and videos in collaboration with medical experts, ensuring they are accessible and culturally/low health literacy competent.
  • Assist with developing and implementing educational Patient Summits, webinars, and community outreach programs designed to empower patients and caregivers with the knowledge they need to navigate their journey with bladder cancer.
  • Collaborate with other organizations, healthcare providers, and patient advocacy groups to ensure that BCAN's educational resources align with current research, treatment trends, and patient needs.
  • Support bladder cancer advocacy efforts by assisting in the development and implementation of strategies to raise awareness of the disease and promote public policies that benefit bladder cancer patients.
  • Assist with advocacy campaigns to engage BCAN's community of patients, caregivers, and supporters in advocacy efforts, including letter-writing campaigns, meetings with lawmakers, and awareness initiatives.

Stakeholder and Community Outreach:

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase engagement with healthcare providers, including urologists, oncologists, nurses, and other relevant medical professionals, to raise awareness about BCAN's educational support resources to improve patient outcomes.
  • Foster strong relationships with key healthcare organizations and community providers to ensure they are equipped with the resources needed to better support their bladder cancer patients.
  • Serve as a resource for healthcare providers, offering guidance on patient education, support services, and BCAN programs.

Data Tracking and Reporting:

  • Manage and track the effectiveness of educational programs, seeking feedback from patients, caregivers, and partners to continuously improve and meet evolving needs.
  • Collect data related to patient engagement, support services, and advocacy initiatives to monitor program effectiveness.
  • Prepare regular reports, summarizing progress, challenges, and key outcomes of education and support services and advocacy activities.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work, healthcare administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • At least 2-4 years of experience in patient education programs and services, advocacy, or program coordination, ideally within the healthcare or nonprofit sectors.
  • Experience with cancer care programs, patient advocacy, or similar areas is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community partners.
  • Proven experience in developing educational programs and materials for diverse audiences, with the ability to translate complex medical and scientific information into accessible plain language.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of bladder cancer, its treatments, and challenges facing patients is preferred.
  • Familiarity with advocacy strategies, policy work, and community outreach is beneficial.
  • Reliable, self-starter, detail-oriented and initiates work without supervision.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule that may include some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and independently when necessary.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and basic data management systems.

Location: This is a hybrid position. Candidates must be able to work in our Bethesda, Maryland offices at least two days per week.

Work Schedule and Benefits: Full-time, Exempt. The schedule requires flexibility for occasional evenings and weekends. Occasional travel outside of the area will be required.
