Employment Terms: 10-month position

About LEEP Academy

LEEP Dual Language Academy Charter School opened its doors in August 2019 as the first charter school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. We use the research-based 90:10 model of Spanish language immersion that helps all students achieve in all subjects while also becoming bilingual, bi-literate and bicultural. Our school communityis linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse, and we are committed to being a good neighbor in Sunset Park for decades to come. Our school is located at 54th Street and 5th Avenue, in a private building with a long-term lease.

Our special education teachers co-teach with a general education teacher as part of Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom settings.

At LEEP Academy, we plan lessons in detail, but not from scratch; we work together from a common set of high-quality curricula in English and Spanish. We collect and analyze formative and summative data. We differentiate instruction and work with families and service providers to meet each childs needs. We communicate and collaborate. We model our schools Core Virtues: Cario, Respeto, Valenta, Gratitud, y Alegra.Teachers work in the range of 50-55 hours per week. Our core work hours are from 7:10am to 4:30pm daily, including a lunch break and prep period. (Students are dismissed at 3:15, except for Fridays when they leave at 1:30pm to allow for professional development.)

The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for:

  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each students IEP.
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Incorporating various teaching methods to support students in meeting their IEP goals.
  • Working cooperatively with the Dean of Instruction, Special Education coordinator, general education teacher, intervention teachers, service providers and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Creating a positive learning environment with emphasis on individualized instruction, including accommodations and modifications where appropriate.
  • Completing all record keeping of students progress in a timely manner.
  • Consistently analyzing student work and performance levels to adjust instruction
  • Being in compliance with all state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Completing all district and state reporting requirements in a timely manner.
  • Some weekends and evenings are required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Spanish fluency
  • A Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related degree within the field of Education, Masters Degree preferred
  • NYS Special Education Teaching License or currently enrolled in a certification program
  • Experience attending IEP meetings
  • Fingerprint clearance
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of school rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  • Ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports. Ability to effectively analyze needs and problems objectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.

Salary Range

65,000-80,000
