Job Description :
Job Title: Bookstore Director Location: Crystal Lake, IL Hours: 8:00am - 4:30pm M-F (with ability to be flexible for potential weekend events) Salary: $75-$80k/year Description:
  • Ensure compliance with policies and mission by reviewing and approving the Store's plans, goals, objectives, and service activities, and by evaluating/reporting on progress towards the same
  • Develop effective department procedures in compliance with best practices and company policies, and evaluate and improve current procedures to encourage growth in the Store
  • Prepare financial analysis of relevant retail activities to benchmark performance, such as inventory turnover, profit margins, day's sales outstanding, break even points, revenue per transaction, etc.
  • Coordinate and supervise the daily operation of the Store computer system that provides the following functions: financial management, inventory management (textbooks, general books, general merchandise), purchase order management, sales processing and point-of-sale transactions, and financial aid interaction
  • Maintain accountability of funds received
  • Develop and monitor the bookstore operating budget and ensure a profitable operation for the Store by making decisions using the profit and loss statement as a guideline.
  • Create and/or maintain a business plan (mode) that includes forecasts, operating performance metrics, and merchandising and sundries requirements
  • Coordinate and plan marketing efforts, including, but not limited to promotional events, visual displays, etc.
  • Compile and track sales data; evaluate data for future stocking and promotional events
  • Maintain control of purchases for the Store by authorizing requests and recommending acceptance of new contracts
  • Assure merchandise is received, verified, added to inventory records, stocked and affixed with accurate and appropriate price stickers
  • Determine prices on books, rentals, and buy-backs in accordance with Company policy and vendor agreements
  • Ensure an adequate supply of books for all classes
  • Ensure the Store is open with extended and/or flexible hours as needed to accommodate peak times or to meet the service needs of the company
  • Oversee and/or initiate all Store inventory activities, which includes ordering, merchandising, receiving, inventory management, and reporting
  • Review inventory level to liquidate, destroy, and/or donate obsolete merchandise with approval of supervisor
  • Ensure timely processing and application of credits to invoices, receipts of commission checks, and outstanding receivables
  • Supervise, train and assist the Store employees and student employees
  • Maintain knowledge of industry standards and innovations regarding books, merchandise, public relations, store operations and information systems
  • Work collaboratively with others (e.g. colleagues, stakeholders, vendors) to accomplish functions and responsibilities
  • Assume additional duties as assigned by immediate supervisor
Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree from a regionally institution, preferably in Business Administration, Retail Management, or related field or equivalent experience
  • Five years of general management experience in a college store environment or equivalent amount of training in a similar area of retailing
  • General knowledge of and experience with accepted business and retailing practices
  • The ability to analyze profit and loss statements
  • The ability to develop marketing and business plans
  • Experience with online sales and online marketing
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of the Store and company patrons
  • Experience running point-of-sale system
  • Ability to work independently yet with a strong team orientation and to develop productive working relationships across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to manage competing commitments
  • Effective supervision skills to guide, lead and motivate a team of individuals
  • Exceptional ability to multi-task numerous priorities and meet deadlines, while displaying a positive attitude and disposition
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong problem solving, time management and analytical skills
  • Ability to assess and measure effectiveness of services

  • Ability to safely lift 25-50 pounds on a regular basis and move materials weighing 10-20 pounds on a continuous basis
