Department: Parks & Recreation Job Grade: 6, non-exemptSalary Range: $12.18 - $16.45BUILDING ATTENDANTDEFINITIONThe Building Attendant is responsible for the proper operation and related customer service of patrons at the Unity Health and Fitness Center during the late afternoons, evenings and weekend operational hours as designated by the daily programming schedule of the facility. Interacts with and provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as required.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from the Park and Recreation Manager. Exercises no supervision of staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis classification performs the full range of duties required to ensure the highest level of safety for public, and staff use. Work is often performed in an assigned area and may involve working around other city staff and/or the public, depending upon assignment.   • Maintain the safety of all patrons and employees in the facility
  • Always dress in assigned work apparel
  • Interfaces with the public in a non-disruptive manner; answers questions and provides standard information to the public if working in a public facility.
  • Respond to all accident and incidents and complete reports, as necessary.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons
  • Resolve any issues with room and building set-ups and breakdowns.
  • Conduct a walk through every 20-30 minutes
  • Supervise open gym programs
  • Inspect all rooms, equipment, and supplies for any hazard or safety concerns.
  • Maintain all common areas to look neat and pleasing to the customers.
  • Responsible for cleaning up spills, smells, and garbage.
  • Washrooms are inspected, cleaned, and stocked at all times.
  • Shovel and salt walks during snow and ice conditions.
  • Secure the building at the end of your shift. Ensure that all lights are off, doors are secured and locked.
  • Assists groups using facilities as requested; may explain or enforce facility rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
  • Safe work methods and safety practices pertaining to the work.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and city staff.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment.
Ability to:
  • Ability to carry out instructions and deal tactfully with people
  • Must have the capability to decipher instructions, schedules, room setups, and emergency plans, and act to complete them correctly and in a timely fashion.
  • Must have the ability to execute good judgment and utilize problem-solving skills when necessary.
  • Ability to follow city policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Must have the ability to use the English language effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, prioritize the tasks, and complete them in a timely fashion.
Education and Experience:Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Must be at least 16 years old or older.
  • Training in CPR/AED/First aid is required within the first 6 months of employment.
Work Hours and Compensation:The position of Building Attendant is a part time position and is paid every two weeks at an agreed hourly wage. The position is classified as a non-exempt hourly employee status and will routinely work less than 20 hours per week. May have to work evenings and weekends. PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust possess mobility to work in city buildings and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium physical work, operate varied hand tools and related equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb toperform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 50 pounds.Psychological Considerations:May experience added stress and pressure in situations of an emergency or during busy times in the facility with multiple functions being required at one time. Other added pressures may be experienced during situations with difficult customers, or program conflicts with participants not cooperatingEnvironmental ElementsMay be exposed to outside elements when completing tasks on the exterior of the facility. Most activities are performed indoors. These conditions include lighting and temperature. Employees work in buildings and facilities and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, controlled temperatures, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
