DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform standard and advanced custodial duties and provide lead direction to the building custodial staff. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Custodial Supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Supervision is exercised over Building Custodian I and II. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in City building(s) and the immediate grounds surrounding the buildings. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Maintains buildings and grounds by cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing, and vacuuming; includes scrubbing, spot cleaning carpets and disinfecting, emptying, cleaning and lining waste receptacles and disposing of trash; cleans glass, moves and sets up furniture and/or equipment, mixes chemicals per manufacturer Provide assurance that all City facilities and grounds are kept clean and orderly in appearance. Coordinate with the Custodial Supervisor for custodial and/or maintenance projects as required. Leads and monitors staff in custodial duties, projects, and other assignments outlined by Custodial Supervisor; assists in planning and scheduling the work involved in providing custodial services for City buildings, including making work assignments, direction, and inspection of assignments, responding to work orders and requests. Performs and supervises routine and emergency cleaning assignments at City facilities and grounds, including scheduling and working with contractors on specific projects. Coordinates with other City Supervisors to gain understanding of cleaning recommendations and/or schedules for specific equipment or area. Inspect and review the work of custodial staff as directed by Custodial Supervisor and provide assistance and direction to staff as necessary; assists in setting City building cleaning standards and ensuring they are met. Assist Custodial Supervisor in ordering necessary supplies and maintain good relationships with supply vendors. Assist Custodial Supervisor train and supervise staff on safe and proper use of all supplies including cleaning agents and chemicals. Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and maintains CEU's and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas. Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions. Operates a variety of motorized and non-motorized custodial equipment in accordance with industry and manufacturer standards. Checks assigned areas for maintenance needs. Maintains buildings and equipment by performing minor repair functions; submitting work requests for maintenance staff in addition to checking with supervisor and arranging for repairs of more involved needs. Secures buildings by locking doors, turning off lights, closing windows, arming security systems and reporting suspicious or unauthorized individuals. Ability to use initiative and independent judgments within established procedural guidelines. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned and attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions, maintains CEU's and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas. Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities. REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS: Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED); Required Experience: 3 plus years of experience in custodial and/or janitorial service or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Computer Skills: Ability to operate computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and out use to new skills and knowledge brought about by rapid changing information and/or technology. Certifications & Licenses: Valid State of Idaho Driver's License Other Requirements: MUST pass an extensive background check including polygraph examination and CJIS clearance. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills Thorough knowledge of commercial cleaning practices. Thorough knowledge and skill in supervision of staff. Thorough knowledge of safe handling and use of chemicals and cleaning agents. Thorough knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work. Thorough knowledge of basic safety practices and equipment related to work. Thorough knowledge of basic facility custodial techniques and materials. Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations. Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines. Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
