The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Building Maintainer to be part of the General Services Team!The DepartmentThe mission of the Department of General Services is to provide quality services that support City departments in a manner which enable them to carry-out their community missions; to provide these services in a cost-effective and efficient manner which best serves the operational needs of City departments and the community. The PositionThe General Services Department is seeking an experienced Building Maintainer to perform both skilled plumbing and carpentrywork as part of the general alteration, repair and occasional new construction of City buildings and facilities. The Building Maintainerperforms skilled tasks associated with both plumbing and carpentry. When performing maintenance services and repairs associated with plumbing, the Building Maintainer installs water piping; repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, flush valves, and other fixtures; packs faucets (i.e. Leaking faucets); cleans and snakes out drains and obstructions in water systems. When performing maintenance services and repairs associated with carpentry, the Building Maintainer maintains and repairs woodwork of buildings; repairs floors, and roofs, including work with asphalt tile and other roofing materials; fits doors, windows and sashes; and performs other general building maintenance work as required. HOURS: Building Maintainers must be available for emergency call out outside normal work hours. For more information about the duties of the position, . QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Education and ExperienceFour years of work in general building maintenance and construction. No specific education minimum. License and/or Certificates A valid California Class C Drivers License. Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing and other building trades;
  • Ability to use the required tools and equipment safely and skillfully such as circular, hand, table and miter saws; sledge and claw hammers, drills and wrenches;
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions; and
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
  • Plumbing experience is highly desirable.
