Job Type Full-time Description Job Type: Full-time - 11.5 hour shifts (8am-8pm). Varying days. Job Title: Buildings & Grounds Technician Location: 3935 Sunnyside Drive Harrisonburg VA 22801 Hours: Full time, nonexempt. Position Overview & General Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Buildings & Grounds Technician are to make repairs, complete maintenance requests and perform preventative maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the facility.

  • Full-time 12 hour shifts (8am-8pm)
  • Check work orders regularly and prioritize based on level of importance; communicate with individual(s) making request and ensure standard of work is satisfactory.
  • Comprehend and analyze blueprints, work orders and instructions in order to complete assigned tasks and essential job duties on daily basis; ask for clarification if information is unclear.
  • Record and report all time and materials used for projects.
  • Safely use a wide variety of tools necessary for any given job.
  • Work independently with little supervision while completing work within reasonable time frames.
  • Assist with and/or complete emergency maintenance tasks; correct problems or recommend contract services.
  • Handle emergency maintenance situations calmly and efficiently; obtain support if needed.
  • Ensure routine maintenance on generator and other systems are performed.
  • Report and/or correct unsafe working conditions or equipment to supervisor.
  • Return all equipment to proper storage at end of each shift; keep work stations and work sites neat and orderly.
  • Maintain and report inventory and equipment needs to supervisor.
  • Assist with room set-up and tear down for events.
  • Assist with emergency drills; fire drills, elopements, etc.
  • Perform snow and ice removal from roadways on campus, driveways, parking lots, walkways, entrances, etc. Be proactive with use of chemicals on walkways, parking lots, etc. as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in general maintenance/repairs preferred.
  • Ability to process information accurately, make appropriate decisions and take appropriate action based upon the information available.
  • Must have good working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and heating & cooling (HVAC).
  • Current Virginia driver's license and meets driver eligibility requirements per Sunnyside policy HR069 preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Strong customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach to engaging with all individuals
Physical and Environmental Considerations: This job operates in an indoor and outdoor environment with varying weather and temperature conditions, varying outdoor surfaces and a wide range of landscaping grades. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to routinely sit, stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 lbs or less and occasionally more than 75 lbs. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures. General hazards related to operation of tools and functionality of maintenance systems on campus; varying surfaces which could be wet, icy, muddy, etc. Hazards related to exposure and handling of chemicals and supplies as well as possible exposure to heat and cold. Minimal hazards if universal precautions are followed.
