Job SummaryThe position of Campus Energy and Resources Senior Manager at Oberlin College is a continuing 12-month Administrative and Professional Staff (A&PS) position. The position develops and manages novel technology designed to motivate and empower citizens, students, staff, and facility operators to be smart users of energy and water, and to take care of the environment.This position is the subject matter expert for the development and execution of a campus-wide energy program focused on renewable energy, energy and water conservation, procurement, and management. This position enables the College to achieve emission/carbon footprint reductions in conjunction with environmental, financial and operational considerations such as life cycle cost savings, resilience, dependability of energy supply, and overall effect on regenerative environmental services. The position engages in the design and management of energy projects and programs to achieve the College Climate Commitments through iterative improvement, verified by data collection and analysis. The Energy and Resources Senior Manager reports to the Senior Director of Energy & Sustainability.ResponsibilitiesThe Energy and Resource Senior Manager engages all campus stakeholders, and (as appropriate) energy consultants to achieve and maintain a culture of sustainability on campus. The position reviews energy usage forecasts versus actual performance data for the campus and assists with strategy development for improvement. The position manages power purchase programs, and monitors local, state, and federal policies for compliance, as well as for opportunities for further energy and carbon emission reduction. The position has an outward facing role through periodic written articles, presentations, limited public speaking and/or tours of Oberlin College energy systems.Essential Job Functions● Develop and manage strategic energy plan that achieves and maintains the College energy and resource goals as described in the Carbon Neutral and Climate Resilience Commitments.● Provide expert direction for energy optimization, distribution, and renewable energy development.● Aid in the development of energy management standards and guidelines for operations, design, and construction through written policies and procedures, data collection, and analysis reporting. Pertains to areas of controls, equipment replacement, schedules, programming, with behavior change strategies for improved environmental impact, and financial sustainability long term.● Participate in design reviews for new construction and renovations for energy efficiency and that value engineering decisions accurately account for the life cycle impacts of decisions.● Collaborate with utility providers and Capital Improvement Program staff to identify, develop, and maximize rebates, incentives, and tax credit opportunities in capital projects.● Collaborates with Facility Operations, and Facilities Planning & Construction, to identify areas within our facilities infrastructure that could benefit from energy efficiency measures and evaluates options. Includes the monitoring of existing meter and building data and tactical expansion of the metering program, including the use of smart metering strategies.● Plan, program, and manage campus wide infrastructure projects related to energy and sustainability.● Assist with development and maintenance of Critical Path Method scheduling using available software assets for programs and projects.● Manage energy efficiency and support preventative maintenance projects related to energy generation and production. Includes software, metering, whole building, and district energy systems.● Consult on commissioning and on-going maintenance schemes, building controls and programming to optimize energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.● Manage hardware, software and data associated with Environmental Dashboard to ensure that it provides facilities personnel, faculty and students with real-time and historic feedback on energy, water, and other environmental conditions. This includes ground truthing metering technology installed in campus buildings to ensure that they deliver and continue to deliver accurate data.● Assist with monitoring of energy-related policy changes at city, state, and federal level.● Responsibly coordinate management of the College's energy procurement including facilitating the strategy and contracts with senior leadership.● Ensure capital project energy use goals are met, and data is verified prior to release of payment.● Produce regular economic analysis of campus energy initiatives.● Clearly communicate goals and desired outcomes to a variety of audiences including Senior Leadership through quantitative and qualitative analyses, graphics, and presentations.Marginal Job Functions* Aid students and faculty seeking data on campus buildings and energy systems related to student and faculty projects, academic work, and courses utilizing energy management dashboard information and tools, or other campus energy resources.* Assist in management of resource reduction competitions and programs, such as Ecolympics, Resource Conservation Team, Eco-Reps, Green Labs, Green Room Pledge, and others.* Assist in writing grant proposals and other funding opportunities related to the energy management platform tools and capabilities.* Managing student interns related to the work.Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics and other quantitative sciences, with minimum of 7 years applicable experience.* Advanced energy management and computer skills.* Certified Energy Manager In Training (EMIT)* USGBC LEED Green AssociateDesired QualificationsSkill In:● Excellent organizational and communication skills.● Written and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all components of the College and external constituents.● Reliability, creativity, ability to independently troubleshoot and solve technical problems.● The position requires excellent problem solving, analytical and business skills; and strong project management skills to meet deadlines and work effectively with others.Ability To:● Be familiar with basic principles such as the different contexts in which terms such as kW, kWh and BTU/sf, therms are used and how to interpret the subtleties of utility bills.● Work with building mechanical equipment operators, facilities managers and trades professionals.● Develop and manage novel technology designed to motivate and empower citizens, students, staff, and facility operators to be smart users of energy and water and to take care of the environment.● Ability to interact in a positive and professional manner with all levels of employees and management in a culturally and ethnically diverse population.● Work the typical Oberlin AP&S schedule (M-F), while accommodating periodic scheduled evening and/or weekend tours/meetings.● Be adaptable to changing circumstances and persevere through setbacks to advance toward the College Climate Commitments, including self-learning for continuous improvement.Certification● Master's degree in engineering, renewable energy, physics, computer science, mathematics, or other quantitative sciences● Professional Engineers License (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification● Certified Energy Manager (CEM)● LEED AP, O+M● Professional related licenses and/or certifications● Experience working at a higher educational institution and/or non-profits, or a private firm serving institutional clients● Project experience performing ASHRAE Energy Audits● Working knowledge and experience with Building Automation / Energy Manager, and other systems● Experience with project design and management utilizing community based social marketing to establish behavior change for sustained environmental impact.● Experience managing projects of complex new and existing large energy systems.● Experience in database management (SQL); Linux, Windows, and Mac (OS X) system administration and system hardware management experience.Physical Requirements:Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others.
