Campus Safety is part of the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management. The goal of this division is to support the mission of Trinity College by delivering exceptional educational, athletic, recreational, and developmental experiences focused on the principles and values of community, diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Recently, we have reviewed and updated the policy manual with a focus on policies and programs to prepare officers to meet the types of challenges that are both routine in and unique to a college setting. Our policies support the mission of the college and in doing so we have emphasized the following key areas in our policies to enhance Campus Safety's support of an inclusive campus climate: implementation of anti-discrimination/bias-free policing policy; increased focus on community policing/engagement; formalized & enhanced accountability systems; and the development of crisis intervention/de-escalation and use of force policies. Position Summary Reporting to the Director of Campus Safety, the Sergeant will provide for the safety and protection of life and property within the College community. Will supervise activities on a specific shift or unit of the department. Conducts various personnel and uniform/equipment inspections and briefings; issues instructions, orders, and direction to Campus Safety Officers. Schedules assignments and deploys officers to needed locations. Provides training and development related to function. Oversees dispatch function. Will work-appropriate schedule based on operational needs of the department. Duties and Responsibilities * Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of Campus Safety personnel, assumes command in the absence of a superior officer or when designated by a superior officer. * Coordinates operations at incidents with City agencies; ensures proper security coverage at all College properties and special events. * Makes daily operating decisions, referring extraordinary problems or situations to a higher authority through the proper notifications. Effectively takes measures to assist in problem-solving. * Investigates and attempts to solve crimes that affect the College Community. Reviews reports and related paperwork ensures that records, evidence, and related material are properly maintained; ensures that same are properly submitted. Coordinates with City police on matters of mutual concern. Dispatches additional personnel and equipment to emergency scenes. * Assists in the management of the Clery Act. Assists with compilations of daily crime reports. * Ensures and protects the quality of life at College and surrounding areas. Maintains positive community and public relations. Assures compliance with College security procedures and City and State ordinances and laws. Ensures compliance with Campus Safety procedures as well as college handbooks. Oversees the operations of Campus Safety Officers, Dispatchers, Shuttle Drivers, and Student Workers * Interacts with internal contacts such as students, faculty, and staff to respond to complaints regarding investigations and to discuss security issues. Interacts with external contacts such as Federal law enforcement agencies, the Hartford Police Department, and other local police agencies, large organizations such as the telephone company, the postal inspector, and various courts to gather and share information related to investigations and to assist in prosecutions. * Fulfills department mission and values with continued emphasis on a community partnership. * Communicates effectively, orally, and in writing; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public. * Trains, coaches, mentors and evaluates the performance of Campus Safety Officers, Dispatchers, Shuttle Drivers, and student workers. Investigate/Administer discipline. * Ensures that complaints made against the Campus Safety Department or any of its employees are properly recorded and investigations are initiated. * Develops partnership with Information Technology Services (ITS) coordinating investigation of new technology initiatives. * Acts as liaison with ITS in support of: computer hardware; computer dispatching software; surveillance software, fleet tracking, etc., and placement of new surveillance camera installations. * Performs related work as required. Qualifications * Associates degree, two years of college, trade school, or equivalent education; at least five to eight years experience as a supervisor in a public or private security environment required; Bachelor's degree highly preferred; campus security experience is a plus; Candidates who possess any combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, technical skills, and abilities also will be considered. * Experience/commitment to working with and supporting diverse communities. Knowledge of community policing principles * Thorough knowledge of current State laws, City of Hartford ordinances, Clery Act, and College security rules and regulations. Knowledge of crime statistics, especially UCR part one crimes. Knowledge of forensic science as it applies to collections and preservation of evidence. * Must possess strong critical thinking skills; ability to handle sensitive and challenging situations with professionalism and compassion; ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team; display sensitivity to the unique role that security plays in a college setting * Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong conflict resolution, negotiation, collaboration, and facilitation skills and experience * Computer and written skills consistent with the completion of detailed and comprehensive reports on computer-based reporting systems; must have meticulous attention to detail. * Familiarity with alarm systems, access control systems (saltolocks), surveillance system (Occularis/OnSSI), and dispatching systems (Report Exec). * Must be reliable and able to work independently under established guidelines; must be able to perform duties at night and during inclement weather, including rain, snow, extreme heat, or cold. * Must be capable of performing the physical requirements of the position which include walking for extended periods of time; standing or sitting at a fixed post for sustained periods; climbing stairs, fire escapes, ladders, running; extended reaching in any direction; crouching, kneeling, bending, or stooping. * An ability to speak a second language is a plus. * Must possess a valid driver's license and excellent driving record; * Must be able to pass a background investigation and psychological exam.
