Posting DetailsPosition Information Job Title Campus Safety Supervisor (Sergeant) Job Description Sergeants assist the AVP of Campus Safety and Associate Directors in support Sarah Lawrence College Campus Safety Department mission. Sergeants shall supervise and participates in providing public information and access, proactive security, intervention, and ensure a safe environment for students, staff, and the public while on campus properties. Assign and trains others as directed by the appropriate manager. Assist in the supervision of and serves as a resource to officers and assume officer responsibilities as required.Essential Duties Summary Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The following are not to be construed as an exclusive or all-inclusive listing of skills and abilities required to perform the job. Management may delegate other responsibilities as required.
  • Supervises and participates, as assigned, as a member of a multi-skilled team for maximizing the safety of staff, students, and visitors including at venues conducted on college properties.
  • Ensures that Campus Safety personnel uphold high standards of behavior, safety, judgment, sensitivity to the cultural diversity of the college community and comply with laws, regulations, and administrative policies and procedures.
  • Reviews written reports and daily logs completed by staff; ensures that all written reports are complete and accurate prior to submission and provides training in report writing as needed.
  • Prioritizes and issues special instructions, orders, and assignments and participates in the work for the assigned shift.
  • Oversees and personally patrols designated campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas of the College.
  • Serves as a mentor to departmental personnel plus serve a Campus Safety Representatives as assigned.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact to enhance day-to-day public relations with students, staff, and the public in a way that establishes and maintains rapport with the campus community.
  • Develops proactive programs that anticipate and intervene in potential and actual incidents where staff, students and/or property may be at risk of harm or damage.
  • Responds to complaints and hazardous situations. Conducts investigations of reported injuries and accidents. Responds to incidents putting students, staff, and the general public at risk or harm. Interviews victims, complainants, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Learns and applies emerging technologies and, as necessary, to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters affecting the college.
  • Evaluates operations for effectiveness, identifies trends, and anticipates changing needs for staffing, enforcement activities, training, and other related needs or deficiencies.
  • Answers questions from students, staff and the public concerning local and State laws, procedures and activities of the department. Provides information and responds to questions from students, staff, and the public.
  • Participates in and may facilitate various task force groups comprised of campus safety personnel and other community members such as, but not limited to emergency preparedness, etc.
  • Establishes and maintains a professional atmosphere that is responsive, courteous, and respectful;
  • Resolve issues that occur on shift with key access control systems, fire safety systems, and parking/traffic control and report any irregularities to the Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety. .
  • Notify the Assistant Vice President of Campus Safety of any incidents which may affect the college.
  • Assist the Associate Directors in identifying training issues and reporting disciplinary concerns to same.
  • Brief incoming supervisors of all daily events and information.
  • Serve as Campus Safety Center Command Dispatcher, perform radio, and position checks of all officers.
  • Observe and detect any criminal activity or violations of Sarah Lawrence College rules and regulations.
  • Responds to unusual circumstances and secures emergency aid when needed.
  • Controls traffic by directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • Takes accurate field notes of unusual occurrences and completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities.
  • Maintains organization's public image and reputation by complying with rules, regulations and legal requirements.
Other Work Characteristics:
  • Campus Safety Officers positions involve regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations necessary to provide campus safety services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year (weekends and holidays included). Work shifts are normally eight (8) hours in duration but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, manpower shortage, workload or work-in-progress. High percentage of attendance, on-time arrival to work and ability to work overtime when necessary are required.
  • Campus Safety Sergeant positions involve exposure to and require the officer to function in the presence of the following:
    • Inclement weather, to include extreme heat/cold, rain, snow, wind, etc;
    • Light conditions associated with day and night;
    • Fire, smoke, chemical leaks/spills - as close proximity as necessary to provide aid.
    • A significant amount of time is spent standing in this job and frequent walking and climbing of stairs is also required.
  • Attend briefings; participates in training concerning various aspects of the First Responder/All hazards Responders as prescribed.
  • Inspect all equipment on a regular basis to ensure that it is operating in a safe manner; reports defective and/or unsafe equipment to superiors.
  • Responsible for all daily activities and for and the performance of a variety of administrative duties.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in campus safety.
  • Addresses any complaints or concerns from students, the public, or other general public regarding campus safety issues, and takes appropriate measures as necessary to ensure an expedient and satisfactory resolution.

Abilities Required
  • Physically respond (e.g., run across campus or upstairs) to calls for service, alarms, and other emergencies; also, must be able to stand for extended periods of time.

  • See objects in detail under various conditions (i.e., at night, up-close, far away, and peripherally).

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE (BUT NOT LIMITED TO)
  • Certified by The New York State Security Guard Training Act.
  • Possesses a valid New York State Security Guard License.
  • Possesses a valid New York State Driver's License.
  • Fully trained in CPR - 1ST AID and Defibrillator or ability to gain such certification.
  • Assists the Police, Fire Dept. and Medical Service personnel when responding to incidents or emergencies on campus.
  • Provides supervision and direction to the Campus Safety officers and security personnel working his/her tour of duty.
  • Ability to initiate Counseling and disciplinary/ corrective action where warranted.
  • Responsible for formulating training agendas and the training of newly hired and current Campus Safety personnel.
  • Evaluates the safety personnel on his /her tour continuously and formally and reports to the Associate Director of Campus Safety.
  • Detailed oriented with satisfactory literacy, writing and documentation abilities coupled with basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations; and demonstrated level of inter-cultural competence.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures, training curriculum, and directives.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and crises and to maintain order and personal composure.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least five years of proven experience in the security/public safety/law enforcement field.
  • Present for all special and mandated events. (i.e. commencements, opening days, formals; etc.)
  • Good moral fitness and ethical standards.
  • Ability to operate electronic security & fire alarm systems along with any emergency equipment.
