Job Description :
Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, a Lead Phlebotomist in the Department of Laboratories is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our population.Will maintain specific knowledge of safe laboratory practices as endorsed by the New York State department of Health and Occupational Safety and Health and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with those practices to ensure the safety of all lab personnel. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence. Duties
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Cancer Center.Function as a shift team leader/coordinator directing personnel, monitoring and maintaining Cancer Center Lab activities. Ensure that adequate staffing is maintained at all times and to ensure all personnel adhere to the SBUH, Departmental and Regulatory Policies, Procedures and Standards.Completes work sheets, daily logs and reconciliation of uncollected specimens prior to the end of the shift. Collect various laboratory statistics on a regular basis.Develops implements and modifies procedures to streamline workflow processes. Assist with Cancer Center Lab Policy and Procedures Manual. Training of staff for continued accreditation.
  • Provides staff training and competency as per established policies and procedures.
  • Performs phlebotomy.
  • Reports any outstanding issues or problems to supervisory staff and attends staff meetings.
  • Initiate requests for personnel, equipment and supplies for areas of responsibility on an as-needed basis.Prepare and monitor schedules, assists with S&E, PSR and capital equipment budgeting.
  • Will exhibit service excellence in all interactions with clients, responding in a timely manner and providing accurate information.Acts as a liaison with all patient units and clinics that use our laboratory services.Assists supervisor to insure that all necessary specimen-collecting supplies are provided to clients.
  • Utilize computer systems (LIS and Cerner) for patient care functions e.g., laboratory registration processes, inventory control function, QC, audits etc. Instruct staff on proper use of computer technology.
  • Adhoc projects as assigned.
  • In the event of non-conformance ensures that processes are not utilized until corrective actions have been taken and staff are properly trained.
  • Serve as a professional role model in representing the department of laboratories. Completes yearly competency assessments including e-learning systems and Policy Tech.
  • Rotates between the Customer Service Center, the Patient Service Center, and off-site areas to meet operational needs.
Required Qualifications:
  • Current Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Four years of phlebotomy experience including a minimum of one-year pediatric phlebotomy experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience and customer service experience in a healthcare setting or related field.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations, laboratory and/or hospital based information systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of wireless hand-held blood collection devices.
  • Associate's Degree Preferred.
  • Computer competency in Microsoft Applications.

Anticipated Pay Range: The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $43,372 - $52,020 / year. The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience.Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
