Job Description :

Shaver Transportation is looking for Qualified Columbia River Captains to join our team of professionals. Captains oversee the safe and efficient operation of vessels, crew, and equipment on the Columbia, Willamette, and Snake Rivers, as well as near coastal waters. Captains are expected to perform the standard duties associated with their role in the towing industry, ensuring adherence to the company's Safety Management System.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely maneuver tugs and barges in various weather and river conditions, including navigating through bridges, locks, and docking.
  • Responsible for the overall safety and operation of the vessel, crew, and tow, ensuring all equipment is clean, well-maintained, and in good working order.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, rules, and federal, state, and local laws, reporting any violations to the office.
  • Instruct crewmembers to maintain professionalism and courtesy at docks, locks, and moorages.
  • Ensure crewmembers are familiar with their emergency stations and duties and conduct regular safety drills.
  • Maintain continuous communication with dispatch using the company's communication system.
  • Regularly inspect all areas of the vessel and tow for cleanliness, orderliness, and safety, addressing any issues promptly.
  • Verify that all safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, hoses, life preservers, and first aid supplies, are in good condition and readily accessible.

Required Abilities and Skills:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, including the capacity to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.
  • Proficiency in reading comprehension, active listening, monitoring, coordination, and communication.
  • Ability to maintain focus and perform tasks without distraction, combining various information to make informed decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Captains must be physically and mentally fit to meet U.S. Coast Guard standards and company policy.
  • Must hold a Merchant Mariner's Credential (M.M.C.), including Ordinary Seaman and Food Handlers endorsements, and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must pass a medical/physical exam, criminal background check, and comply with drug testing regulations.
  • Should have previous maritime experience and be able to read, speak, and write English well enough to understand and convey important safety and operational information.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Physical Standards:

  • Captains must be able to communicate effectively using various methods (VHF radio, sound signals, hand signals) and have the necessary hearing and vision capabilities, including color vision and depth perception.
  • Physical ability to climb stairs or ladders, lift or move equipment, and perform emergency duties as outlined in the vessel's Station Bill.
  • Capable of reading and understanding navigation rules, regulations, and company directives, and accurately recording required events.

Work Setting and Conditions:

  • Captains will work in various weather conditions, including rain, sleet, snow, and extreme temperatures. They must be prepared to work long hours, often on short notice, and bring appropriate clothing and gear.
  • Shaver Transportation operates three eight-hour shifts daily, and the schedule may vary based on the volume of work and seniority provisions.
