Education: High school, GED and specialized vocational training in rough and finish carpentry. Training or Experience Required: Three to five years carpentry experience; some school or commercial industry experience desired. Job Summary: Performs skilled/full journey level duties under general supervision to install, repair or maintain the district's buildings and physical plant in a condition of operation excellence so that full education use of it may be made at all times. Utilizes discretion, ingenuity and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have knowledge of the National building (ANSI and/or BOCA) codes as it relates to carpentry work.
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
  • Uses tools or equipment with expertise acquired through vocational experience and/or specialized training. The most difficult equipment include power saws, hydraulic wrenches, router, miter saws and other hand tools to finish job in a professional manner.
  • Essential Job Functions (PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES):
  • Installs, repairs, remodels all building fixtures, doors, walls, locks, panic devices, molding, windows,
  • furniture, etc. in the district. 2. Builds shelves, cabinets, countertops, lap boards, etc. Must be able to plan and organize work. 3. Performs rough carpentry/framing, hangs drywall and tapes/rocks, hangs/installs suspended ceiling tiles, hangs items for teachers, textures walls in preparation for painting. 4. Lays sub flooring, lays flooring, tile, carpet, etc. Assists with installation of glass and mirrors, etc. 5. Installs, repairs, and builds playground equipment. 6. May build and/or repair sidewalks, driveways; builds forms and does other concrete work. 7. Must be able to measure a job and assist in purchasing necessary materials at the most economic price. Informs supervisor of parts, equipment and other supplies that are necessary to do job. 8. Works with City building inspectors. 9. Performs general housekeeping duties at carpenter's shop and maintains shop and tools, including assigned vehicle. 10. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is not limited to just carpentry but all areas as needed. Supervision exercised: Does not directly supervise except he/she may supervise other employees assisting with a specific job. Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Employee usually stands/walks 4-5 hours per day. Some benchwork or office work of about 1 hour per day. Frequent to continuous squatting/crouching, crawling/kneeling, bending/stooping, climbing and reaching above the shoulders and pushing/pulling.
  • Frequent carrying/lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting from 50 to 75 pounds lifting overhead cabinets, doors, plywood, sheetrock, equipment, etc. Job requires using both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls; both hands for such repetitive actions requiring simple to firm grasping and/or fine manipulation.
  • Requires manual dexterity/visual ability to operate hand and power tools, and ladders. Able to read blueprints, plans, and schematics. Possesses hearing to distinguish normal/abnormal sounds. Able to communicate with fellow workers and the public. Able to climb ladders and steps, crouch, kneel etc.
  • Requires working on unprotected heights (roofs); Use of/close to machinery; working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment (truck, tractors, fork lift, trenchers); exposure to toxic gas, solvents, electricity, asbestos, powered saws, etc.
  • Terms of Employment: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District. (260 day contract - 12 months) Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Shawnee Board Policy on evaluation of personnel.
