Job Description :

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a Senior level Carpenter to perform the design, repair, construction, and modification of a variety of small structures in County recreational and park facilities. This individual primarily works outdoors and throughout many of the Arlington County Parks and Recreation facilities in designing and creating carpentry solutions, providing advice and direction to other carpenters on a team, and contributing to the maintenance of the beautiful parks around Arlington County.

The Carpenter plans and implements the construction, renovation, and repair of a variety of structures, objects, and fixtures such as small buildings, rooms, walls, partitions, bridges, signs, benches, tables, bleachers, fences, doors, roofs, cabinets, and windows; including providing technical carpentry expertise and direction to facility managers, management, other carpenters, and trades workers; and performs related administrative functions.

Major Duties:

* Performs senior-level skilled carpentry work and coordinates construction, renovation, and repair projects for recreational and park facilities throughout the County;

* Participates in the identification, planning, design, scheduling, and implementation of Carpentry projects;

* Provides technical construction direction and coordination to other carpenters or to fluctuating crews of trades workers for projects;

* Uses hand-held and power tools and equipment to make repairs, construct, assemble and/or modify a variety of objects and structures;

* Identifies structural problems and designs small construction projects;

* interprets work orders, blueprints, construction drawings, manuals, and/or assembly directions;

* Determines appropriate construction methods, tools, and materials, including maintains equipment and supplies;

* Provides on-site quality control and safety oversight; and

* Performs job related administrative functions.

Minimum:

* High school Diploma/equivalent/vocational school; and

* Three (3) years' experience in carpentry.

Substitution: Additional years of carpentry experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

* Leading or coordinating the work of others;

* Training and/or experience in electrical, plumbing, painting, and/or masonry work and

* Working with shop tools (joiners, shapers, bandsaws, table saws, planers, etc).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Background Check: A pre-employment background check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver license. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Work Environment: includes exposure to drafts, noise, sawdust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.

May require special licensure or certifications depending upon the area of assignment.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Hours: 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The employee must be available for callback in emergency situations.
