Description
  • Demonstrates flexibility and a willingness to participate in on-call and schedule changes as needed with a positive attitude.
  • Obtains necessary supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures, with consideration of surgeon's requirements, patient size, age and gender. Communicates pertinent information through verbal or written report regarding specific surgeon requests, potential safety hazards, and patient concerns. Maintains up-to-date preference cards for each surgeon.
  • Adheres to the AAMI Standards. Demonstrates surgical asepsis with the use of sterile supplies and overall monitoring of the surgical team both pre-operatively and inter-operatively. Demonstrates knowledge of application of sterile dressings, immobilizers, casts as requested by surgeon.
  • Assists the surgeon inter-operatively using aseptic technique with passing instruments, supplies and equipment to surgeons in a prescribed manner. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon throughout the procedure.
  • Works collaboratively with the circulator for documentation of accurate counts (i.e. needles, sponges, instruments). Reports to the circulator and/or surgeon, amounts of irrigation, local etc. used during procedure and any adverse/unexpected developments.
  • Demonstrates preventative measures to ensure patient and staff safety, by verifying proper and safe functioning of equipment and adherence to electrical safety techniques, before and after each use. Demonstrates safe patient transfers using patient safety devices.
  • Responsible for retrieving/opening additional supplies as needed. Confirms labeling information required for specimens and safely transports specimens to lab. Demonstrates correct labeling of solutions on the sterile field. Assists the team in room turnover. Restocking of supplies, linen and equipment in the operating rooms and department.
  • Orders supplies for the surgical department and anesthesia from purchasing using the Meditech system. Communicates with the OR Supervisor for special order items.
  • Understands hospital policy in regards to sterilization procedures of instruments and implants. Assembles instruments in proper wrap/package and prepares them for the re-sterilization process after each use. Assigns sterilization dates to all packages. Monitors integrity of packages, sterilization indicators and expiration dates.
  • Demonstrates knowledge with safe and proper cleaning techniques for instruments. Demonstrates awareness of routine maintenance for sterilization systems. Accurately records all testing of equipment and reports malfunctions to appropriate personnel. Includes proper care, cleaning, handling and storage of endoscopes and related equipment and accessories.
RequirementsBLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment. Graduate of an accredited program of surgical technical training. Graduate of an accredited Surgical First Assist (CFA) program. Possess and maintain a current Certified Surgical First Assist Certificate. One to three years experience as a surgical tech with completion of a FA certification required. Ability to interact well with patients, families, physicians and staff members to provide appropriate and safe patient care.
