DEFINITION:
Responsible for scheduling, selections and maintenance of city owned cemetery plots for the citizens of the Yazoo City cemetery. Responsible for the collection of fees and directing plot location openings and closings. Responsible for the oversight and management of the upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery. Oversee the Cemetery groundskeepers in preparing gravesites for funerals, digging, opening and closing of graves, cutting the lawn, pruning trees, keeping vegetation trim and even, and planting grass over new grave sites.
SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Directly reports to the Public Works Director
Receives general supervision and administrative direction from the Public Works Director and the Mayor of the City of Yazoo City
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:
Schedule routine observation of cemetery grounds for repairs and clean up services Review and assist maintenance staff in the maintenance of cemetery grounds including opening and closing cemetery plots, weeding, mowing and repairs. Collection of fees for burials, by maintaining accurate accounts receivables records for deposits Provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees and temporary staff to correct deficiencies Provides daily assignments and instructions to employees to maintain scenic grounds, cemeteries, paths, and roadways according to weather and facility's maintenance schedule and conditions Oversee and management the preparation of gravesites for funerals, including opening and closing of graves. In appropriate season, prepares soil, plants seed or seedlings, weeds, rolls lawns, cuts grass, or removes leaves Oversight of minor maintenance and cleaning to assigned power equipment Provide exemplary customer service to all individuals by being attentive, understanding, responsive, fair, courteous and respectful. Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE:
- Pertinent federal, State and City of Yazoo Ordinances, rules and regulations
- Operations, services and activities of City of Yazoo cemetery
- Tools, equipment and material used to maintain and repair cemetery
- Hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work City of Yazoo ordinances regarding cemetery procedures
- Small maintenance tools, including various types of landscaping equipment
- Turf maintenance feeding and care
- Shrubbery maintenance and appearance
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner
- Estimate equipment and material needs to perform assigned the maintenance of the cemetery
- Supervise, organize, and review the work of cemetery workers Must be steady and reliable worker
- Must be able to perform tasks independently
- Organize and coordinate multiple tasks
- Supervise, train and evaluate workers
- Maintain accurate records
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those in contact in the course of work
- Exposure to dirt and dust
- Walking, standing, sitting, reaching, or kneeling for extended periods of time
- Using a backhoe, lawn mower, weed eater, shovel and other pertinent tools and equipment needed
EXPERIENCE & GUIDELINES:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Three years of responsible experience in maintenance of a cemetery or other sacred grounds
- Valid Driver's License
- Must be able to stand, climb ladders, bend, stoop, and lift up to fifty pounds
- Manual dexterity to operate power equipment, such as chain saw, power hedge trimmers and leaf removal equipment
- Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is acceptable
- Position requires physical abilities of sitting, standing, reaching, bending and flexible use of hands and wrists for periods of time, including visual acuity and listening skills
