General Description Under the direction of the Coordinator of the Center for Adult Transitions, the Assistant will work with students who participate in The Center for Adult Transitions at Union College of Union County, NJ ( UCNJ .) The Center's mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing transitional services, peer mentoring, educational opportunities, career exploration and linkage to community resources. The Center supports the educational mission of UCNJ by creating an inclusive community that meets the diverse needs of students through advocacy, equitable access, support, and resources.The Center for Adult Transitions at UCNJ serves a cohort of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities upon graduation from high school through the age of 24 with mentoring, career development, educational services, skill training and referral to wrap around services.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities • Student centered approach that values diversity and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice and belonging.• Advocates for the needs of student in the Center.• Works collaboratively with Coordinator and Specialist to support student success at UCNJ and beyond.• Assists students with skill development including appropriate interpersonal communication, listening skills, time management, problem-solving, and leadership.• Assists students with developing executive functioning skills including planning, focus, prioritization, and impulse control.• Supports Coordinator and Specialist in providing weekly trainings on a wide variety of topics as needed.• Meets with students to discuss homework, projects, and upcoming exams/quizzes.• Responds to inquiries via in-person meetings, phone, text, and email.• Maintains appropriate records.• Performs other responsibilities assigned by supervisor or designee.
Education Requirements Associate degree in Education, Social Services, Psychology, Special Education, or a related field required. Bachelor's degree is preferred
Experience Preferred Experience:Experience in providing direct services to persons with disabilities or experience in college counseling and academic advising/counseling preferred.
Competencies and Skills Required • Experience in tutoring, skill development or mentoring.• Excellent interpersonal skills.• Ability to interact with a diverse student population.• Ability to learn advising.• Ability to learn and work with a wide variety of students with disabilities and adjust mentoring techniques to meet their needs.• Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and student body.• Proficiency with MS office products.• Preferred Competencies and Skills Required:• Bilingual in Spanish and/or American Sign Language• Ability to tutor mathematics/science courses.
Physical Demands and Work Environment • This position's duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.• Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.• Some travel required.
Salary Starting at $20.00 per hour

Terms of Employment Part-time; hours not to exceed 25 per week. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on and off- campus sites as needed by the college. Mandatory overtime is required throughout the year, especially at peak times. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.Grant Position:Position will be terminated upon expiration of grant funding.Posting Detail Information
